I'm guessing you just get the odd "pip" off the alarm on this setting when the gauge climbs to 90 on the hill?

I appreciate you are looking into the coolant system for a possible fault, i'm just putting another angle on the diagnosis.. I look forward to hear what you find out!

Drive around all day at 65. go up a hill and it slowly climbs to 90 alarm chirps. get on flat comes back down to 65. As i said i will rescue bongo from garage and go over coolant system this weekend . got a thermostat ordered and will flush system out and see what happens. It didn't do that in the summer i don't its a winter thing, I think its crap/airlock in the system and a knackered thermostat. at worse a new water pump.

Another thought occurred to me, (& i am by no means an expert on this.) could cold winter air around the scavenger fan sensor be delaying its operation with hot air dispersal around the actual engine when under load, thus driving the temp gauge higher than normal.. Which would not be there during the summer, because the heat would be more evenly dispersed? Say for instance scooting up a steep hill? It's positioned by the handbrake isn't it?

So my good mate Steve picks me up from the house. And we drive to the garage to retrieve my beloved. When sat in his peugeot 409 coupe in heavy traffic i glanced at the temp gauge and it was very high!!!. I was sat there musing about bongo's and over heating. I then realised that classic smell and low and be hold we where sat in are own Cloud off Steam!!!!. We pulled to the side of the road I knocked on a local house for more water. We just got to the garage in time in another giant steam cloud. You got to laff

Mine operates at the same temperatures as yours, and has done without fault since I had a new cylinder head and Mason alarm. IMHO, I don't think you have anything to worry about. I cannot remeber my Mason alarm setting but I have set it to give a reassuring 'pip' on longer climbs. A slightly lighter right foot normally rectifies this.

Also, ref what the garage said. Running a diesel engine lean with the type of fuel scheduling our engines have will not cause an increase in temp. Since the fuel is scheduled according to engine speed and power setting, not by air flow (as in the case of a petrol engine), a reduction in fuel will reduce engine temp and power. Over fueling a diesel will cause an overtemp as this results in a longer burn to the point where the combustion has not completed before the exhaust valves are opened. Not good for the ports, valves, manifold or turbo!

Yeah I quite like that, nice & small & neat, slots into a switch blank. You can never have too many gizmos IMO
