My Gear box will not behave
I have recently returned from a trip around Europe and my bongo was awesome except for the gearbox...
It keeps going into hold function and I have tried and replaced most bits. Last thing left is a gear box recon. Before I do this does anyone know how much this is likely to cost
I will be forever in your debt.

Re: My Gear box will not behave
Hi, do you mean the hold function is coming on without you activating it? Can you give any more odd symptoms please? For example does it only do it cold/hot/both? What happens when you actually press the hold button? Does that still work as it should etc?onthatdonkey wrote:I have recently returned from a trip around Europe and my bongo was awesome except for the gearbox...

Evening all,
It is 'holding' mainly after the engine is warm ( also smells very warm). The hold function will not work at all whilst it is in this emrgency mode. I have replaced the speed sensor and the transmission fluid with no success. I have heard that it could be the solenoids but this is not registering on the fault codes. It used to go after a couple of hours driving but now it happens after about twenty to thirty mins.

Perhaps the oil cooler on the box is shot... Usual problems are low or dirty ATF (which has been done) then a sticking solenoid(s).. If you can find a transmission specialist that has overhauled a box on the older black cabs, then you have found a place that can overhaul the auto trans on a bongo. Hopefully dandywarhol picks up on this thread and can suggest a possible fault.

When you changed the ATF did you just suck it out & refill or did you drop the pan, clean the filter & blow the cooler through? - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 96&start=0onthatdonkey wrote:Evening all,

Is the hold light flashing or just coming on steady?
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.
Re: My Gear box will not behave
Thanks bigdaddycain that is top info, as for missfixit's question the pan was removed and the filter cleaned and the problem continues. the hold light flashes at a constant flash with the normal stuck in gear syptoms

Hi,
There is a number of things that can cause this fault. The one that you could try yoursel is,disconnect the battery for 5 minutes to reset the system. Its always worth a try.

Have you tested the hold button (switch).onthatdonkey wrote:Nice one rita I will give it a go
There is also a possibility that the ECU has gone into limp mode.
I'm sure some one on here will be able to tell you how to access the code function.

Re: My Gear box will not behave
Sounds to me like the transmission has gone into default or limp mode. The codes need reading to see why. If the hold light is flashing from the moment you start the engine then the trans ECU (computer) is seeing a permament electrical problem. The most common in my experience is TPS or solenoids. As stated before there is a fact sheet on how to read the codes, if not get it to a transmission specialist.
