Wotcha!
Just about to get my van treated at Rustmaster so had a quick look around it and gave it a clean. I noticed that when the front doors are open, right at the bottom below the door hinge is an open cavity between the inner and outer front wings which in my wagon was full of dead leaves! Not good for rust.
I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to add something like mesh or netting along the full height of this open cavity to stop more getting in but allow air to continue to flow around this area.
But I have a question. Clearly it would be best to clear this area of all the dirt and muck before the wagon is treated but I'm not sure how far the cavity goes - it doesnt go far forwards (towards the front wheels), but I'm not sure if the cavity also goes across in front of the driver and passenger footwells. I'm keen to blow out or wash out the debris from this cavity but I don't want to blow or wash it further into the vehicle's underpinnings!
So, does anyone know the extent of this cavity, and is their a tried and tested way of stopping debris getting in?
Cheers very much,
davey.

Re: Rust protection between inner and outer front wings
Hi,
I had my car done at rustmaster. I have noticed that gap on mine but it stays clear of debris. From the gap by the door it goes all the way forward, you can remove a plastic wheel arch liner and see each side.
From side to side you need to look underneath to get a clear idea, and that means removing the plastic engine undertray, but it curves around where your feet go in the front.
Rustmaster will treat the underside well, but I don't think they do the bits you are talking about. Mine is still just paint but it does stay clean and no signs of rust so far. I was thinking about removing the plastic liners and treating it with clear waxoyl.
I have had the inside of all the doors done, and plan to remove the front grill and do the various bits behind there and around the headlamps. Again I'm okay on this so far but may as well do it before any rust starts.
I'm not sure that the inside of the sills have been treated either, there are plenty of rubber grommits to gain access easily though.
Finally make sure you get the bit under the spare wheel, and if poss the rear light clusters removed and the inner rear panels treated as well.
Ask them if they do it.
BTW my floorpan is still immaculate after over 2 years, so I can vouch for the effectiveness of their treatment.
So all in, from what I can see they treat the floorpan only, and not inside wings etc but best to ask.
Let us know as I'd like to get the rest of mine done.

Re: Rust protection between inner and outer front wings
Hey Andy,
thanks for this - I'll take a list of questions for the Rustmaster folks. They advertise that they inject the cavities but of course they can't be specific on which parts of which vehicles are done.
I'm there on Thursday and I'll report back on where they inject. Anybody else got any questions on specific areas they treat - I'll find out all I can!
cheers, davey.
