v6:smell of exhaust fumes/petrol

Post by hogggman » Fri Dec 04, 2009 9:53 pm

hi,
i have noticed this for a while, but it seems worse when stopped at traffic lights etc:
i get a distinct smell of exhaust fumes, occasionally a petrol-like smell, but this seems worse when either stopped at traffic lights,or when using the aircon or heating.it definitely seems worse when on hot, rather than cold, and it can be quite a strong smell.
i`ve checked the exhaust and it seems perfectly sound.i tried holding m palm over the exhaust pipe to listen for leaks, but there was too much pressure to even keep my hand there.
any other v6 owners noticed anything similar?perhaps the aircon needs a clean out?
thankyou

Hi hogggy, we have a smell, i would say like burnt oil, have had it since we bought our bongo, i find its worse when stationery at traffic lights, its got better with time but can still smell it when hot :? Ive checked underneath but all's well, thought it might have been the underseal we had done at preparation :?: i think it maybe a little oil dripping onto the exhaust but cant see any evidence #-o
Got ourselves a strong air freshener which does help

Your not on your own here mate

Regards Iz
I have a plan and its as HOT as my pants

Anyone for a scavenger over-ride switch? I don't talk about it much but apart from cooling the engine compartment so it didn't over-warm the car interior on a hot day, the other reason was to remove the occasional whiff of diesel I get in the cab, and which SWMBO wouldn't appreciate smelling. I flick it on discreetly it the first whiff - most effective I must say. Out of smell is out of mind

Hi, could it be the Lambda sensor which should measure the air/fuel ratio and feedback to the ECU?
They do fail, which means the fuel ratio can be badly out.

Just an idea!

I think you might find quite a few V6's produce this sort of smell. Any oil that gets out of the engine, runs backwards down the engine block (the engine slopes backwards) and ends up dripping on the hot exhaust. As soon as you stop moving the smell rises up into the ventilation and into the Cab. We get this but it depends on the wind and how long the Bongo has been standing for before use. Once we've been travelling a while then the smell goes and doesn't come back till its been stationery for several days.

You may find it's collecting in the lip of the sump and dripping onto the flexi pipe  seems to be my rocker cover seal [-o< a few other possible nasties await closer inspection #-o but it looks pretty clean around the rest of it so [-o< [-o< I only wish i had pockets as big as my petrol tank :D or maybe smaller right boot :?

Hi,

I had this for ages, turns out it's the camshaft oil seals, drips down the front of the engine, round the lip of the sump onto the exhaust.

I'll let you know the cost next week but I've decided to get it fixed as I really hate the smell.
