Grr.... not starting

Exactly Mike, but as we have Holiday booked and I have been told 2 days to sort Bongo, when "she" gets there..... I will get back to normal next Tuesday when work starts again..... I have a meeting pm on Wednesday but the week otherwise is free....as you say about the wallet.....well if you have a vehicle of whatever sorts you always pay & pay & pay..... this is my first diesel....wondering if I should have gone for a V6....

Nah - the diesel is a great motor, or the V6 has its own problems, whichever way you care to look at it. I think your first observation is the right one i.e. "if you have a vehicle of whatever sorts you always pay & pay & pay" - its the luck of the Russian Roulette draw with motors. The problem is that none of us is flush, so it really is a pain when it happens

At least I can share my experiences and in this case the usual suspects (filters, fuel cut off etc.) are not the reason for my problems...fuel is getting to the pump (and even from a clean source) but it isn't getting from one side of the pump to the other which is why the "jump a cam bet tooth" could be the problem

well if I am right it would not time right then ......oh well Bongo is still going as I have little time to play and now no more inclination..... I feel a Bongo No Start fact sheet (flow chart) coming on...

Update..... Bongo is off today at 13:00 to be mended by Dr Bongo.....

Wouldn't it still pump fuel if the cambelt had moved? - just at the wrong time so it wouldn't run properly

That is what I thought..

...Bongo should be with a well known Bongo garage about now......still as long as it is back next week and mended I shall be a happy bunny.....

I'm going to buy myself a banger for £400 to take the pressure off fixing the Bongo.
Don't want to rush it but I do want to fix it myself as much as possible.
It'll give me a chance to do a few other jobs like the steering rack seals, fix the fuel guage etc.

Back to the pump, (and I'm sorry to hijack this thread although it does keep it on topic)
The pump should be self priming as the fuel supply is below the height of the pump.
So a gravity feed to the pump should by my thinking refill the pump.
Still not tried it yet as I've been busy bending various peoples ears about it and not really getting anywhere, it seems, in sleepy Suffolk at least, that diesel injector pumps are a bit of a black art, not to mention dirty and smelly.
All the more reason to see if I can get my head round it

Some pumps are said to be manual priming (this from a thread a long time back) but mine is self priming and so are just about all others I've heard of on here

Well almost sorted.......should know more tomorrow........But....the cam belt was a notch out & the diesel pump had been set to compensate this...

....Tank was full of crud too...

.....but next is to blank the EGR and change the pump if needed.....it is looking like the govenor side of things is broken inside the pump....oh well

Well.....Bongo is back....

The rotor in the diesel pump had begun to disintegrate....

and when the injectors were cleaned (3 times).... fragments of metal swarf was present.....new cam belt was fitted, replacement pump all timed in...clean injectors....wow what a difference...

it seems more economical....will check on my return trip tomorrow..

No they had not got a clue...... it could have been because the timing was wrong had accelerated the problem but then......

BH say they only change a pump around every 6 months or so as they are in the main reliable...

When Bongo was there, as cambelt was out a notch, I got them to fit a new kit, as well as the other Belts and blank of the EGR too.... It took 3 soaks in the caustic cleaner they use to clear my Bongo's injectors...

£30 worth of cleaner...

but worth every penny....beautiful smooth engine, starts "on the button", little if any smoke from the exhaust and better economy....sorted...

Had to get home from Plymouth so could not do the Falmouth meet, left at 06:55 and was at home at 12:05....with a stop to refuel.....I am now getting an extra 60 miles on my tank fills.....

must keep checking every time...

There was some crud in the tank....but a warning from BH.... they have filled new containers with diesel straight from reputable fuel companies pumps n(not supermarket) and had crap settle in the bottom of the containers.....so there is some dodgy fuel out there....
