DROP LINKS AND D SHACKLE REPLACEMENT

Post by chiefster1976 » Mon Nov 30, 2009 11:27 am

HI. i have a knocking at the front left of the bongo..i was guessing drop links as ive heard they are nortorious for this...the mechanic confirms this, but i have checked myself for movement by jacking up the bongo and use a crow bar to check for play, but cannot find any movement?? Any advice on this would be great??

Another problem i am having is a creeking at the N/S rear... machanic showed me the problem..
Its the D shackle has snapped off...Its located at each side of the bar that curls over the rear diff..
Its basically just a thin d shape strap with a rubber in the middle and a bolt either side of the strap...
ARe these easy to come by and does anyone know the CORRECT NAME FOR THIS PART AND ANY PART NUMBERS??
Thank you for the help...Gav.. [-o<

The broken thing at the back is the Anti-roll bar bush bracket. Change both sides, and both associated bushes whilst you are there. They are the same as the ones on a 626 (89-92)

Hi Gav  We had a knocking sound at the the front passenger side, had the droplinks changed about a year ago, when checked with bar... no movement, took advice from Jamie (Di and Jamie) he said that they can knock even when no visible signs of movement. Jamie was correct  replaced both fronts again, they do not seem to last too long

Hi Dave, To to confirm it is indeed the anti roll bar bushings? its the bar that goes over the top of the diff.. there is also a bar near that which just behind the diff and axle which goes diaginally across the rear..(i thought THIS was the roll bar? )
P.S. like the bbs alloys on your bongo.look neat..

Hi pete .hope you are well.. i WILL replace the front links as precaution..

Anyone have links or part numbers for D roll bar bushings and front drop links?
I heard the vectra drop links fit but what year of vectras? not sure about the Rear D roll bar bushings...

Chiefster,

The diagonal thing which is attached to the axle at one end, and the floor at the other end is the panhard rod. It stops the axle moving sideways when you go round a corner.

The anti-roll bar is a big 'U' shaped bar, starts attached to the floor by short drop links, goes back to the axle, where it is attached by bushes held on with 'D' clamps/shackles, travels across the diff to the other side of the axle, through another identical bush/ 'D' clamp and then back to the floor with another short drop link.

You'd have to double check the dimensions, but I reckon these 626 ones will fit (and hopefully last) http://www.superflex.co.uk/results.php? ... hmodel=342

Those alloys were on the Bongo when I got it from JAL. They look like BBS, centres are badged 'KTS', which might be a Japanese favourite. Who knows. Look good though.

The parts comparison spreadsheet just lists 626 (89-92)

Well!! I have tried some auto parts places to no avail. I have purchased through ebay u.k the front drop link i needed and rear anti roll bar bush with U shaped clamp.
Although the U shape clamp and bush have mazda part number and should hopefully be easy to locate at mazda here in OZ , the front drop link was purchased through another seller on ebay hence NO MAZDA PART NUMBERS PRESENT. I have taken the drop link to a few car parts centres and no one can seem to match the drop link up(ha, none of them EVEN brought out a part to even try and match up)..all im getting is you will have to buy a universal one.. :x
But i beleive there is SURELY a vehicle that fits EXACTLY to the bongo drop link..
i am only aware of the vectra drop links being compatable and others saying the mazda 626 MAY be compatable but its all a bit vaige!!!
There are alot of knowledgable bongoers on this forum but i am really suprised there is NO definate answer to which vehicle will definatly fit the bongo front drop link!!
I am going to take a LAST stint at going to MAZDA and see if they will at least TRY and match up the drop link for me..
I just carnt believe that i have to import parts for the bongo all the time!!
It would not be a problem in England but here in OZ its just so frustrating!!
P.S. Looking at the drop link its seems to have 2 slots at the end of the shaft on the12mm thread. Am i right in saying that these are just to locate the mounting point so the nylon nut does not spin??

I have sourced a better drop link from a company called PEDDERS..
The drop link was matched up to one i purchased from Ebay... The one from ebay is a thin as s**t.. an i carnt see it lasting long..the PEDDERS one however is FAR thicker in construction and bascially it has a threaded bar which you cut down then screw the ball joint back on..hay presto.part no. 424318 .and only $55 Australian..and im sure will outlast the ebay ones... If there are a PEDDERS in the u.k or a company like them i would suggest trying them... (ill try and post some pics soon of the drop link)..

I purchased also off ebay u.k(different supplyer) a rear bush and bracket for the anti roll bar.. genuine mazda bush but its made from rubber...
I asked PEDDERS if they would match the bush up and they found me a bush directly taken from a FORD LASER 90-93( bascially i think a ford escort)part no. EP3188/22 or Mazda Euinos(didnt say the year on the mazda) .
THESE bushes are RED polyethurenne(spelling crap sorry) and im sure will out last rubber mazda bushes..
8)
I hope this helps others on the forum in chosing alternative drop links.rear bushes, compared to inferior ebay parts. =D>

Quality info there chiefster =D>

I can see us all having to source parts and get them posted from Oz

But seriously, I seem to recall we had a 'compatible parts' thread on BF where this info could usefully go 8)

Never known the bar itself to fail, it's always the joint that seems to be the problem with replacements, usually because the gaiter wears/perishes, be interesting to see if this one lasts better.

I know a few people have asked about poly bushes, this could be a good find =D> Although the bushes I fitted were mazda originals for a fiver a shot, hoping they last another 13 years or so (as long as the originals)
