Diesel Pump woes - engine ticks over but doesn't rev

Post by rustyp » Wed Nov 11, 2009 12:17 am

Hello there,

my epic battle to have a working Bongo is so close to victory I can smell the diesel but I keep being slapped back!

The Bongo has sat since the end of March. The mechanic working on the Bongo at first had a problem getting the Bongo running for more than a minute. Now he has had it ticking over for half an hour until the fan kicks in BUT it will not rev at all just simply tickover. It doesn't seem to want to draw in much fuel.

When it was sat for months there was some bio-diesel mixed in with ordinary diesel (mostly diesel in ratio) which congealed a fair bit in the pipes and tank which were cleaned out.

I have heard that Bongo diesel pumps can be a nightmare to bleed through, one solution being to rig up a 12v electric pump before the diesel pump temporarily to help push diesel through to bleed it.

Also it has been suggested that the O-rings (the ones underneath the 2 plates lower down on the pump) may have dried-up?

One though I have had is perhaps the cold start valve in exhaust was closed?

Any help/experience/pointers would be good.

I've tried searching for relevant posts and FAQs to no avail so far!

Thanks, Russ

You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Bongo diesel pumps are self priming & I've never heard of anyone needing a pump to help the process. What was the story before it was laid up - was it working fine before that? Have you had the cambelt changed - if so, could it have been fitted one tooth adrift?

Blocked injectors are another possibility. It is often suggested when changing the fuel filter to fill the new one with injector cleaner to give the system a blast thru on start-up.

Any other symptoms like difficulty starting, blue / black smoke etc?

there has also been mention that if the air admittance valve is blocked in the tank then it wont be able to suck fuel in.
not much help but its something else to look at, have you tried putting fuel directly to the pump via a pure source.
nothing blocking the air intake.
