New speedo dilemmas

Hello - I have recently purchased a Freda with a broken mileometer (suspicious i know!)

I have purchased a replacement from a breakers - Ideally i would like to set the mileage to the current reading of my new vehicle - is this allowed and if so how do i do it

Is there an alternative method ie can i buy a new meter with zero milage

as long as its set to the previous reading its ok

use a small screwdriver between the dials and rotate them gently

As long as you don't try to defraud a new owner by claiming less miles, there's no problem with whatever reading you have.

(I've seen ads for vehicles where the seller has kept the original speedo (in KPH), when putting a new MPH one on, and is giving the old speedo with the sale as proof).

AFAIK, there's no law broken, it's only a legal requirement to have a working speedo, not odometer.

When an odometer has broken and a replacement needed, it can be legally altered as long as the correct mileage is recorded. If you want a 'belts and braces' job, get an MOT test to record the current mileage.
'Clocking' a vehicle is illegal.

Many thanks for your help chaps - i have taken it to bits and re-set the mileage to match the existing - so fingers crossed it still works when i install it at the weekend !!??

The motor that drives the Odometer does not seem to react to any stimulus when detached from the curcuit board so i am not convinced it will work in the vehicle - that said the circuit board may be doing something other than DC or pulse over four pins and two windings ????

Any thoughts??
