Tyre Choice for Alloy Wheels

Post by g0uihsteve » Thu Nov 05, 2009 6:29 pm

Hi from Steve and Gail (New Bongo Owners)
Great website and forum - more info than anyone could take in.
I'm looking at a set of GTR 17" alloy wheels for our new Bongo. Was thinking about fitting some 215/55/17's but obviously need the load capability.
Any advice on tyre choice would be most welcome. (Oh - I'm keeping the original steel wheels for the moment).
- Steve and Gail (96' SGL3 that speaks fluent Japanese!) :D

Welcome guys. Have a search for tyre ratings as its on here somewhere. I think it is 94 rating at back, 92 at front minimum rating but I'd go fo 94 min. rating on all four in case you need to swap them around. 8)

Wrong Mike   Minimum 92 front and 96 rear. I agree that it's best to get the same size all round, with a minimum load or 96.

Welcome Steve and Gail sorry can't with the wheel issue as mine came with alloys fitted but mine are 16" and the size can affect your speedo readings mine is reading about 10 mph slower than I am traveling which with speed cameras every where is a little worrying. I tend to be a slow driver anywhay.

Stick your location in by clicking user control panel top right so we know where you are and local people may then be able to help you.

And enjoy the Bongo =D> =D> =D>
Be nice to everyone they might be nice back.

Just had a look on http://www.blackcircles.com , there seems to be quite a good choice at the right load rating.

.... I'm suprised at that, Aitch, my speedo (on 15" rims) was overreading about 10%, putting 16" (215/65's) on brought it spot on agaings the gps.

Welcome Steve and Gail :D

I am changing to 17" alloys and used Wheel Base. You just put in the details of your car, pick your wheels and and they then send you them with the correct tyres on.
The only thing is I see that the correct load rating for Bongos is min. 94 front and 96 rear but I have been sent 94 all round (225 55 17)... I just hope they will be ok as they are with my dealer to be fitted just now [-o<

Not really, as they should be 96 at the rear, they've sent the wrong tyres & therefore should replace them with the correct load rating - insurance implications etc as discussed to death on here.

As Kirsty says that isn't correct - stop your dealer from fitting them and send them back.

Guys/Gals - thanx for your comment etc - all taken in and chewed over! - We're overwhelemed with such positive feedback and response(s).
Teddy - thanks for your comments. Ah Mike and Tony at Wheelbase - you've just jogged my memory from 15 years ago!!
In the early 90's I was production Manager for Maxpower Mag and I remember these guys very well.
I'll drop them a line - they owe me a favour or 2!! - likewise do the 'ICE' guys (Smudge at Bassjunkies etc etc)
The "RECALL" starts here..... :P

AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!!! I am beginning to hate Bongos as nothing has gone right with my purchases   and I think my dealer was planning to fit the new wheels this morning. :(
I have emailed Wheel base and I will wait to see what they say . Its dreadful that you put your trust in "experts" and they let you down [-X

It's not the Bongo that's the problem, it's self appointed so-called experts.

If they say the tyres are correct, just ask them to put that in writing for you to pass to your insurance company. Ohh and ask them to add that they will take responsibility for any legal action.

I ended up going for a little bit of over kill with 225/50 R17 98W XL all round the ride is probably compromised slightly by going for the XL's but not really that noticeable that I would moan about it.

I prefer the 17's over the standard steel wheels but I still wanted a little bit of comfort so decided against the 18's :)
