When did Bongos come with airbags?

Post by Gripped » Wed Nov 04, 2009 11:29 pm

We have a 96 model Bongo and was surprised that it didn't have at least a drivers airbag - there is no sign on the wheel so I assume it hasn't got one.

Any ideas when they were fitted as standard?

I'm fairly certain it was sometime late 95.

Can't recall seeing a '96+ without one.

But your paperwork may not be accurate. According to Mazda mine came off the production line on October 21st '97 but my V5 says it was 1st registered (in Japan) on August 1st the same year :?:

Or possibly, you may have a late registered '95.

Is there a way of telling from the VIN number?

I guess that also means I don't have ABS :( but then I don't exactly drive very fast....

If you have a spare ten minutes, have a flick through Ron Miels research here . . .

I can never forget that my brothers friends wife was all but blinded when the airbag went off and shattered her glasses in a minor collision. Its a rare occurrence but that memory haunts me and I'm happy without airbags in a relatively substantial motor like the Bongo

Check out this Japanese website which is in English. If you delve right into it you will find the full specification of every model that was produced.

The 95's rarely have airbags as they were optional, drivers were fitted standard in 97 and the twins in 98.

...but seriously, you've done well to get a '98 with splits seats. I love them when it comes to load lugging etc. Mind you, they caused a problem when I bought our Bongo as my wife (who was very anti-Bongo at first) said sarcastically "'Great, so you got rid of a car that had rear seat headrests and bought one whose seats don't have them." I sorted that one out by making some removeable ones out of some two-be-two-be-two-be. You know me

Bear in mind the airbags may well be out of date :-"

Sorry to confess I have all but. Need a shot in the arm of enthusiasm. But really, the Bongo is fettled and settled nicely for me and its great just to be using it. Its a great all round comfy and nice handling utility vehicle - love it to bits.
