Voltages at fan / Resistor
Hi.
I recently bought a 97 Bongo and there are a number of minor (hopefully) probs with it.
The first being the lack of fans in the front cab (fans at the back are fine).
I have read various articles on your (great) site and have removed the resistor block from under the bonnet. When doing so I noticed that the plug which should have been in the block wasn't in the block but had been pulled out and a patch wire had been inserted between two point in the plug which correspond to L and MO on the block.
I have resoldered the obvious bits in the block (one connection was flapping in the breeze) and have reinserted back in the bongo - but no joy. does this mean the resistor is kaput?
Another symptom is that when i press the AC light on the panel inside the cab it only lights up when the fan switch is on position 1 (which probably accounts for the L to MO patch) and goes out at all other positions.
All fuses seem to be OK.
Next question wll be about powere steering.

AC will only come on with fan in position 1 so thats normal.
have you checked the fuses under the bonnet? or put a meter on the fan plug to see if there is a voltage? also try spinning the fan motor by hand to make sure its free.

FAQ here - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 43&t=28727 Basically if the resistor pack has a problem, chances are it's because the motor is siezed or on its way out, but it's not a hugely difficult job to strip it & sort it, there's a fact sheet in the members area, certainly cheaper than £150+ for a new one.

Since last post I have checked voltage at the plug and get nothing from MO to L, or to ML, ot to MH or even H (presume this is the right check to make)? This is the same no matter where the interior switch is pointing.
Had a look at the fan (is that the thing that can be got at by removing the black thing over the radiator and look like a motorbike wall of death (Hollow & deep sided) If so then the fan runs freely.
Also checked the fuses - I could find 3 - 2 on driver's side (FAN 30A & FAN 2 40A) the third was next to FAN housing ADD FAN 30A - fuses all OK.
Also took the opportunity to clean out the drain hole to get rid of accumulated water.

Correct, sounds like the resistor is totally caput, make sure you get the climate control one and not the one for the manual control onewhat the lever for on the black thing over radiator - is it for summer and winter conditions?

oops just re-read your post, the bridge wire was why your air con only works on position 1.
The fuse for the fan is in the box next to thge blower unit and is the 1 next to add fan.
have seen the contacts on the selector dial coroded and just need a good clean.

Hello again,
I must admit I don't know about much but isn't the resistor some kind of load thing and needs electricity for it to function.
So if there is no voltage anywhere in the plug then is there a fault elsewhere and not the resistor

Voltages at fan
Hi,
I order for me to try and track down the problem with my front fan heater does anyone know what voltages should be present between what and where on the plug that goes into the fan resistor.
Also is there a wiring diagram?
I have read of applying voltage to the fan to see if it working - whereabouts can this be done?

The connector to the fan motor to allow you to test it is under the air scoop under the bonnet at the top of the rad coming out from the fan housing.

So.
I have located the fan input plug and applied 12v direct from the battery to the fan. Intially the fan didn't turn but taking a risk i gave the blades a helping finger and they turned - yay! But when i removed the voltage the fan stopped (fair enough) but didn't start again after reapplying (boo) unless I helped it along again (mmmm).
Whilst i was there I replugged in the resistor and looked for some volts at the other end of the plug (with the ignition on and fan set to Hi) and it was variable i.e. one second it looked like 12v then another 0v.
I assume the resistor feeds this plug?
So do I have both a resistor problem and a fan one?

Yup, your fan motor needs stripping out & sorting (factsheet to help you - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/member ... repair.pdf - I haven't had to replace the bushes yet though & I've done 3 ), it will have got wet, the drain hole in the plastic casing underneath it has probably got blocked as it's too small, enlarge it while you're at it, this has been done to some bongos from the factory.
Sounds like one or more of the connections on the fan speed resistor needs sorting, but, pointless doing it until the fan's been sorted (IMO), or it'll just give up again.
It could be the track/contact on the fan speed control knob as 321away said on the other 'Resistor' post.

I hope your 'minor' problems are finding a suitable solution - but just wanted to say Hi - I'm also a Swindonian so will look out for you - what colour is your vehicle, AFT or bongolow? You just missed out on a great little local meet, hoping to arrange another one next year, keep an eye on the 'Rest of the West' or 'fancy meeting up' thread, in the meantime happy bongoing
