Diff oil and ATF fluid

Post by eoptio » Wed Oct 14, 2009 11:28 pm

Hi

looking to change the differential oil on our 2wd freda. How much oil does it take, just drain the oil then refill until oil comes out of filler hole?

Also looking to change the ATF fluid. Having read the factsheet and various posts on this I understand no new gasket is required unless the old one breaks, do I put instant gasket on it or just some ATF fluid?

thanks

K

Avoid the instant gasket IMO - if it gets into the 'box it'll jamb up the valves in the valve block :?

Got to agree with Dandy (again? :? ) This thread may help with the ATF- http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... =3&t=30096 ,.
With the diff, check the filling plug comes off before you drain it, make sure the breather is clear, should be about a couple of litres, as you say, fill it til it's full.

Hi

thanks for quick replies. Yes I found the ATF fluid instructions with the pictures, very helpful! Will leave the instant gasket, and just put some ATF fluid on the gasket.

That's all I did, 2 done with no probs. To be honest I think you'd have a job getting the gasket off the pan cleanly, but it separates from the bottom of the 'box with no problems.

If the original gasket does break/crumble, i'd be inclined to make a new one from a cork gasket sheet...Simply use the pan as a template.

You'll need to check if your bongo has a limited slip differential, (less likely on a 2wd) as the replacement fluid you use may not be compatible with the LSD.

I had mine checked recently at this place....

Thankfully mine was brimmed full, and crystal clear, so i resisted the temptation to change it it case i used the wrong type of oil, mine is 4wd,had the "LSD sticker" on the diff casing, but there is no limited slip diff is fitted to mine, (i checked while the wheels were off the ground).

Hi

checked and no LSD, got GL5 EP90 gear oil for the rear diff, I assume that's ok as long as it's GL5?

thanks
