Post by mike2564 » Tue Oct 13, 2009 4:54 pm

Just a quicky... having replaced a pipe earlier on in the year I had to refill the system, although after pumbling around with the bleed pipe and nearly burning my fingers... have no anti freeze left in just water... my question is what type of anti freeze should i use? and how much of it please.... can anyone help.... thx Mike

If you are running around with "more or less" just water in the system you are asking for problems.....Anti freeze is also a persersative.
Your system holds 13 liters so you need around 5 of antifreeze in there unless you live in a very cold part of the country.......
I would drain and flush your system and then add premixed coolant and bleed.

Had a full service on my Bongo today, and had the cooling system drained, flushed and refilled.
I had the service at Ian Taylor`s garage at Market-Drayton.I asked Ian about putting long-life antifreeze in the motor and he wouldn`t use it(red one).He explained that if any vehicle had ordinary antifreeze, even after flushing, the red would jellify and clog up the
radiator etc! He put in the recommended antifreeze of 5 litres. He also mentioned that the red was used in some new motors only.Ian`s phone number is in the garages section on this
forum,Ian is very helpful and knows the Bongo`s well. This is the first time I have used Ian,
and I will go to him again.Very thorough on things, easy to talk to,gives honest advice. :D

Hi EckerB... I understand wht Ian meant, but he forgot to say that if the old coolant is properly flushed from the system, then the use of red coolant is fine. I've had red coolant in mine for a series of coolant changes now... Two main reasons, it standardizes stored coolant in the garage for use with other more modern vehicles, and it shows up a nice bright pink (for leak detection) when a UV light is passed over it.
