Oil on inlet manifold joint

Post by Gripped » Thu Oct 08, 2009 7:44 pm

Hi,

We are buying (hopefully) a Bongo diesel. We took the step of having a RAC inspection as it is a private sale and an older vehicle with a high(ish) mileage.

In general the Bongo was fine, but there were a couple of potential issues, the main one being some oil around the joint on the inlet manifold (after the turbo) which would indicate that oil is leaking through the turbo into the engine. The exhaust is also smokey (black) but only when blipping the throttle - so this may be unrelated to the turbo or not....

My question is whether anyone has had similar symptoms and if it is likely that I will be needing a new turbo soon [-o<

Thanks

Chances are it's down to the egr - fairly common, not a big issue, easy enough to blank it - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 43&t=14463 - but a good point to beat them down on price with

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have heard that the black smoke can be caused by the EGR, but would you get oil on the inlet manifold flange with that?

Thanks for the info.

The only nagging question is wether the EGR issue would really cause "oil" to weep from the manifold flange? OR is the "oil" actually something else?

If the RAC guy says it's oil, I'm inclined to believe him.

Thanks again

If this helps - this is the sort of crud that finds it's way back into the inlet manifold from 2 different vehicles

But if you aren't sure about it, it's probably best to walk away.

Thanks for all the info. This is what mine looks like, you can see a black oily leak from the joint. I assume this is consistent to what you have seen?

Doesn't look too bad to me, but can't see too clearly on the photo.
