just make sure you bring some spare bumpstops this time Ste, Corninsh roads are pretty bumpy The good news is that it's usually nice & sunny, so it shouldn't be too wet for you

I see you met my ancesters up at Minions Kirsty. The stones are supposed to be children who were turned to stone for playing rounders on a Sunday. Seeing as my Holmans lived and worked the mines here abouts, these poor souls could be my distant cousins. I'm so glad that you have taken the time to seen my part of the world. I'm just sorry that I didn't now of your intentions of touring after you stay at Looe, for I would have enjoyed your company and it would have been a great pleasure for me to have given you a personal guided tour. Maybe next time.

Thanks for that bit of info Dave, hadn't got around to finding out the mythology of them, I didn't really know of my intentions myself, just didn't feel like going straight home & decided to go for a wander on my own for a couple of days (hermit mode ) Can't beat a stone circle or 2 to recharge the soul. Haven't a clue about the ones on Dartmoor, just spotted a few stones from the road, just as the sun came out, forgot to save it on my sat nag too
I'm sure I'll be back down at some point in the not too distant future to explore further, loved the Moors, even if they do scare me witless at night on my own

Edward/Dave - does the "man" bit of Holman derive from "maen" (stone) d'you reckon? That could add even more credence to your belief that your ancestors may have been the poor souls who turned to stone.

Kirsty - I could possibly bore for Cornwall on some of our stone circles and other ancient sites (bet you didn't get over to the cist with the luminous algae (Rillaton Barrow) just beyond the Hurlers) and I have got quite a few books on the subject (archaeology and legend). I'm interested in a professional capacity rather than a spiritual one. Actually, I've got quite a lot of books on quite a lot of subjects Cornish and Devonian.

If you've got a vague idea of where the stones were on Dartmoor, I might be able to tell you where they were so you can go back. Wasn't Grimspound, was it? That's a hut circle and that's more what your pic looks like but I'm probably wrong because it's five years since I visited Dartmoor's stone circles. Next time you're down that way, go to Brisworthy Circle. It's lovely - a bit of a trek on foot but not too rough.

I think the Dartmoor stones were in the vicinity of Grimspound, possibly a bit further west though but it was literally a hundred yards south of the B3212, just up the hill overlooking the road above a small layby on the westbound side just big enough for two cars, 3 smallish circles above each other going up the hill with other bits of alllignments in the vicinity, so you're probably right on the hut circle theory.
Didn't encounter the hairy hands (pretty sure Franco was across the other side of the country ) but definitely heard noises that weren't ponies or sheep - they don't growl

Hedgehogs? If they were the bigger, tougher Dartmoor cousins of the one that lives under next door's shed I'd run for my life. He makes some terrible noises
