Van Tyres and MOT

Post by Alison01326 » Wed Sep 23, 2009 5:07 pm

Has anyone ever come across an MOT failure/advisory regarding van tyres on a "car".

I was chatting to one of the staff at our local tyre place about putting something like Continental Vancos on the Bongo, and the he said that I should be careful as it is an MPV (ie a car) and not a van and an MOT tester could fail it for having the wrong tyres.

The Bongo will be MOTd on Tuesday with its existing tyres and I shall be asking the tester what he thinks, but I just thought I'd put the thought up for discussion anyway (as I know tyres are always a favourite topic

Look forward to your responses, peeps :D

We're running Continental Vanco Contact 2, if you show the tester the speed & load ratings required for the original size tyres, there aren't many options.

We're running 195/70R15 97T on the front and 215/65R15 102/104T on the back.

No problems for me too...Past no problems in May this year......Barum Vanis all round..... and being van tyres they exceed the load rating needed which is not a bad thing IMHO.....

That sounds pant's

I was told the bongo was a van derived mpv. Look at it. Weight wise etc. I would have though it was more suited to a van tyre (maybe softer better compound). Many vans will do 100+mph that weigh 2.0 to 2.5tonne

You can put pure road tyres on an on off road motorbike and all terrain tyres on a 4wd road vehicle.

If they are rated for weight and speed/correct size for wheels, should be no problem as long as road legal.

I've even heard of people sanding off 'not' leaving for road use, on car tyres for very high performance road legal track cars like light weight caterhams for a bit of extra grip, using intermediates so they have tread so ok in mild wet and dry.

Loada crap - Vancos on mine, as long as the load rating is right and a matching pair on the same axle it'll pass.

Maybe problems in store for the future with upcoming EU tyre noise regs hitting UK but should be no problem now, for the above reasons, Alison. The tyres you've got on now, Le Mans RV502s same as ours, are neither car tyres (they're 4x4 all-terrains), nor even EU/UK approved - but ours has passed two MOTs with them. Of course, they exceed Bongo speed and load ratings. Hope you're well, and that Isaac fella. David and Di.

(I see it's an, unintended, race to the magic thousand  If you get there first, I plead on the road again shortly, followed by hospital stint :? Good luck Tuesday.)

Aren't the EU just great?! David - I didn't realise that you and I were almost neck and neck with the postings. I never actually look at my numbers (but I have now!!! ) I daresay your incapacity will in due course cause you to race ahead of me.

Looks like I have got a fairly comprehensive response to my posting, so when the time comes (in about 1000 miles or less - probably on our return from sunny Essex at the end of October) I'll see who's got the best deal round here on the Vancos.

I did think it was odd that suitable tyres could be based on what the V5 says rather than suitability for the vehicle they are going on viz weight, usage, etc.

Thanks, all.

I'll try but we have some rather disastrous problems with our technology at the moment and are relying on the dongle which is not ideal here as we are on the edge of an area with no signal. Likewise we are right on the edge of the nearest WiFi hotspot which is down at the beach so can get intermittent internet. I'll try and pop out later and pick up a better signal!!!!

Will e-mail you anyway - should be able to stay on line long enough to send one (doesn't boost my post count but I want to send you an e-mail!!!! :D )

Seymour passed his MOT with no advisories, by the way :D =D> :D =D>

Congrats to Seymour - nice new tyres next? Look forward to email when you can. (That's given me one more post but I've got to get out in the garden now, pre-trip :D ). D.

If you have trouble getting Vanco......... ask for Vanis..... Same company(Continental) own Barum and the 2 tyres are made in the same Barum factory in Czech republic.....
