Knocking ....

Post by NikC » Sun Sep 20, 2009 7:50 pm

Hi All

Some advice please !

I've noticed a couple of strange bangs coming from the front of my bongo.

The 1st worries me more, basically whenever I turn right hard i get this knocking noise every second for a few seconds, its quite a load and hard knocking as I can physically feel it - any ideas where to start with trying to diagnose this ?

The 2nd aint so bad, its basically when i pull away having been stood on the brake, I get a single knock every time I pull away.

Thanks folks

Sounds like CV joints are on their way out

Not sure about the pulling away one but the hard lock one does sound like CV - regular clicking or knocking. Have a look to see if the rubber boot has split behind the wheel or look for grease spatter marks where the joint may have thrown its grease out. Worth checking sharpish as I've had one of these collapse fairly dramatically - if it happens you'll know about it - graunching and clattering.

Might also be worth checking your front drop links for other knocks, usually when going over bumps or rough ground - like the CV joint they are a bit of weak link and go quite often.

Thanks guys, is it safe to use the jack to get it up in the air to check these or should I really be getting it up on a ramp to check ?

The Cv boots can be checked whilst still on the ground... Lock the wheels over to one side or another for an easier look... Chances are you'll spot all the old splattered grease under the relevent wheelarch. You will need axle stands if you jack the bongo up..Please don't rely on the jack alone.

Unless you are a bit clued up about motors andare thinking of doing the work yourself, you might do well to get a reliable mechanic (or maybe a practical Bongo owner - there's a few round York, for a few beers) to take a peek. When you say you can 'feel' to knocking, do you mean through the steering wheel, or vibration through your foot, or what? This might help give a clue. The U-clamp holding my rear anti-roll bar and bush in place failed through metal fatigue, leaving the steel roll bar free to knock against the chassis, which it did when I was turning. Possibly the same could happen if your front rollbar had come adrift. Or it could be suspension, steering, bearings, bushes, anything really!

Keep chatting and we'll get there :D

Fingers crossed it's as simple as this.......

The exact same thing happen to me the other day, A single knock when turning right only, after a couple of days it got worse and knocked all the time. What I found was the nuts for the front near side drop link (lower end on to the roll bar) needed tightening. The roll bar was moving on the drop link bolt. this can be seen if you get someone to rock the bongo.

19mm nut on one side (open ended spanner) and 17mm nut on the other..... There might be other sizes of nuts as when I got the drop links which where OEM it did not come with the outer nuts, :? so the mechanic had to search hard for some as they are not a standard pitch?

Good luck
