Same old problem

Post by tonic » Fri Sep 18, 2009 3:08 pm

Can anyone offer any advice on the following before we throw ourselves on the floor and behave like two year olds.

Had an overheat due to split hose, decided to replace all hoses, thermostat and waterpump. Followed fact sheets for bleeding etc. took her out last night and showed overheat on temperature gauge. No significant coolant loss, no leaks, no coolant in oil, only headache from banging head against wall.

Thanks

Toni

I found that I had to bleed the system several times before getting all the bubbles out. Also, are you doing it with engine running and pressure cap off the expansion tank?

I've lost count how many times I've bled the system. Yes to engine running and expansion cap off, I've been following the Hayden & Allans method.

If you followed the instructions and got the Bottom Hose HOT aftre 30/40 mins then you have bled it..
If thats the case and it overheats then I fear the worst.... is it chucking coolant out of the header ??

I had a similar problem after a split hose. I had to pump/squeeze the hose connected to the rad several times until eventually the air lock cleared & the water level in the tank dropped. Then I was able to top up with more water & it seemed fine after that.

i think i may have found easy way to bleed, make sure you have a thermostat with the small hole fitted to van. Then remove coolant temp sensor from just behind where timing belt cover is in top of cylinder head. fill radiator refit cap and fill expansion bottle. then fill via bleed hose under passenger seat till water and no bubbles come out of temp sensor hole i have done this with front of vehicle slightly raised. refit sensor and test if still geting hot repeat. This definatley seems to get all air out of cylinder head.

Certainly sounds like an air lock.....I made a seal with my mouth around the header tank and blew into it fairly hard (pressurising the system) until coolant came out of the bleed pipe, thus expelling the air, i then continued with the normal bleed of the system....worked for me!

I did mine the other week and filled with a hose pipe into the bleed pipe and bleed it in no time at all :D

Thanks peeps for your responces............ looks like another day of bleeding bleeding #-o #-o

With regards to the hoses I have replaced coolant hoses with the silicone set, would they firmer/solid than the rubber ones?

Cheers
