Mis-fire and white smoke

Post by S Jacobs » Fri Sep 11, 2009 11:34 am

On a cold or damp morning my Bongo has a rough start shaking (mis-fire) with White smoke from the exhaust. I have had the glow plugs checked but the are fine, could there be any other problem. It has done only 67000 miles and has just had a full service plus cam belt change.

Mine occasionally does something like this in winter. Sometimes it does it on start up, but other times it will start ok, but then die a shuddering death at the first junction. A bit of churning gets it going & it'll be fine for the rest of the day - usually. Having discounted banjo-filter, fuel filter, air filter, battery & glow-plugs, I have a feeling that it's linked to the EGR in some way. The fact that it only occurs in cold damp weather, is intermittent & seems fine once the engine is warmed means that it "feels" like a sticking valve somewhere... Will get around to removing the EGR at some point!
