Trailer board makes my indicators beep!

Post by Alifriendee » Sat Sep 05, 2009 10:07 pm

Connected my trailer board today to check it, and all the lights work as expected except the indicators make a beeping sound in sync with the flashing when I use them.

The beeping noise appears to come from the rear light cluster on the nearside.

Strange!

Any ideas why it should do this?

Thanks

Cos it's supposed to, to remind you you've got a trailer there

This is a requirement for towing, a beeper or seperate indication that the trailer lights are flashing. It is easiest to fit the beeper near where the tow hitch wiring is joined to the car wiring that is why most people fit them up inside the rear panelling rather than provide a seperate indication on the dash. It gives peace of mind - if your connection to the trailer, caravan or light board is broken or comes loose you loose the beep as the extra draw from the extra indicators makes the beeper sound with the connection working correctly.

In fact, I think its a legal requirement to install some means of alerting the driver to a failure of the indicators. If the beeps stop - your indicators aren't working on the light board.

Ooooooh I get it. #-o

It's just that on my last car it didn't do it when I used the trailer plate so this is new news to me.

Now... how to remember when I have the new "bak rak" fitted. Perhaps a small electric shock to my bum when I engage reverse !

if the towing wiring was fitted by a professional it should have had the beeper or warning device. If it was a diy fitting it may have been omitted.
