Each to look after their own.
I haven't got an airbag in a Mazda so personally couldn't give a flying wotsit
Obviously if you haven't removed one the requirement doesn't apply - but if you have the requirement to report a modification applies, if of course, you don't want your insurer to have a chance to opt out of paying up.

Could be an interesting minefield for the future then, with all those airbagged Bongos and other cars coming up to 12 years of age and running around with expired airbags and resulting in higher personal injury claims that the insurance companies wont pay out on because the airbag had expired.
:!:
Surprised a company hasn't started offering a " recondition your airbag" service, a bit like Kwikfit with the aircon.

It's only recently that people have started to realise that aircon needs re gassing ............... watch this space

Interesting topic. I know that Volvo's for instance have a "sell-by date" label on the door frame indicating a date when airbag/seat belt reactive charges/ABS kit should be inspected/replaced. Usually 12 years from manufacture. As these items may cost more than the vehicles value it does explain why some would consider scrapping.
From the insurance point of view it might well be that a time expired airbag could be used as an arguement to refute/reduce a claim, as insurance companies ain't exactly slow in these matters. I suppose in these cases one should be glad most Bongos have either one or two at most. Modern cars can have up to 8 separate bags inside the cabin!
