Oops carwash incident, which fuse do I need?

Post by mp3oplecarrier » Wed Aug 19, 2009 3:08 pm

In a moment of madness I just cleaned under the bonnet with a jetwash... whilst driving home i noticed the charge and sediment lights are both on  Assuming I've not killed the alternator i'm guessing i must have blown the 'big' fuse, can anybody tell me where it is, what it is, and whether it's a halfordsy thing or an ebay thing?

Cheers

Does it still start & everything else work? All the under bonnet fuses are in the black fuse boxes under the bonnet just to the right of the starter battery. Details in the fact sheet in the members area.
Not sure that blowing the "big" fuse would produce those symptoms, I'd check the alternator output, just measure across the battery, does it go up from 12.whatever volts to somwhere between 13.8 & 14.whatever volts?
Not that the alternator is under the bonnet, but if you were generally sticking the jet wash all over, you may have got it, or it may have just given up anyway?

if you had blown the main fuse, it wouldnt start at all, so it cant be that, might be water earth a live somewhere???

Or the jet wash has loosend the battery terminals or moved one that was loose, try tightening them first

the sneek the wifes hair dryer out and start drying under the bonnet working through all the gubbing

Everything works fine, although i turned off the aircon and radio on the way home in case it was not charging.. Good idea to check the voltage, I'll go do that now, as for alternator failure, I've just done 800 miles on holiday with no problems so this seems likely to be the culprit...

Where's my multimeter?

OK, voltage checked, 12.3 engine off, 12.2 steady when running even when rev'd

Steve

PS it's about a zillion degrees out today, so any standing water would have dried out by now...

PPS all terminals checked tight..

Sounds like it's goosed, check that voltage across the alternator itself & make sure the 12v feed is getting voltage to the alternator, make sure you haven't filled the fuseboxes full of water too I suppose. May well be worth getting the hairdryer out as Wayne suggested

If I take a reading from the big bolt on the back of the alternator to earth I get the same 12.2v whether the engine is running or not. There is no water in either the fusebox behind the battery or the one behind the air scoop... I've killed the alternator haven't I?

I would leave it a couple of days and see if it turns out ok (well back to normal) just in case it has got some water in it and it could dry out and work normal again

or

Fingers crossed it'll sort itself after a few days anyway.

Steve I hope it is an easy job for you to sort, you have put so much time into your machine I know, many of us that have followed your "Upgrade" I hate to hear of Bongo problems when I love our girl so much.

Hope it is good

Hope it didn't put too much of a dampener on your birthday Steve  Just console yourself with the thought that it may have been on the way out anyway.
