Is It a Problem? Temperature Guage

Last few times I have been out in Bingo Bongo, by about 5 miles along the road the needle on the temperature guage hase risen to top and over!! Then in the next mile or so it quickly falls back to normal and I complete my journey with no problem.

Should I worry?

Bear in mind the temperature gauge is dumbed down so much it's useless (unless you've got a Mason alarm fitted?), if the engine is actually getting that hot that it's moving the gauge that far - you got problems, cos that's hot & it'll kill it very soon if it carries on. Could be the thermostat? but that seems quick to get that hot.
Hopefully it's an electrical problem that's just an instrumentation issue rather than a cooling system issue.
Have you got any other coolant system monitor fitted? Low coolant alarm, TM2?

Could it possibly be a sticky thermostat?......It sounds as if its staying shut too long causing the overheat, then opening up cooling everything down. Try and check your bottom radiator hose just before it settles down again, if its cold then the thermo is shut, once its opened the same hose should be hot but not as hot as the top one. .....just a thought.....

I see there are a few people out there having similar problems. Have no other monitor fitted.
Methinks I will keep an eye on next few trips out and check as suggested.
Hoping its a glitch as I did get back from Cropredy, Fairport Convention, another 75 miles after the guage went back to normal with no further problems.

If the engine is actually getting that hot, you run a serious risk of cooking it, I'd get it checked asap.
