Blown Radiator

An update, having recieved a nice new, clean radiator:

Replacing the radiator was fairly easy but i'm fairly sure that the 'stat isn't opening so i can't finish bleeding it. The bottom hose is cool with the gauge creeping past 1 o'clock and I daren't let it get much hotter. The heater matrices are warm so i don't think there's much air in the system so probably the 'stat is knackered. Well that's my thinking. Feel free to disagree.

Looking at the position of the stat housing, changing it looks like a real headache. Does anyone know how long this takes?

It's actually not that bad, only two bolts holding it in place, bit more fiddly with 4wd, but only about half an hour tops on my 2wd.
Re the gauge - have you got a Mason alarm fitted?

Managed to get the old thermostat out. For anyone else attempting this, un-doing the dip-stick bracket makes life easier.
I found there was no paper gasket fitted to the housing. Do you think there should be?

Chucked the thermostat in some water on the stove to test it and it opens at 92 so it is a duffer and probably the cause of my woes. Will see what the new one does when I get it later.

No, haven't got a Mason alarm. Do you recommend?

Sorry forgot to say about the dipstick it is in the factsheet in the members area I think. There shouldn't be a paper gasket, the rubber gasket on the stat does the sealing. Try putting that back in without the stat, should bleed nice & quick, making sure it's the stat causing the problem, it'll help give it a proper flush through then, just don't leave water on its own in there for too long, & don't forget to put the new stat in before adding the coolant
Mason alarm is a great bit of kit http://www.townace.plus.com/ie/ietemga2.htm Personally I'd recommend a Mason & a coolant low & high level alarm http://enginesaver.com.au/Bongo.html should cover all eventualities then, you could also go for the TM2 combo if you want a digital temp readout. Of course neither are any replacement for proper maintenance

Kirsty, I have followed the link to the alarm on more than one occasion but I have yet to work out where the "button below" is to order one. If I could find it I would have ordered one weeks ago!

I shall be patient and wait a while.
Might have a go at a zener, but if I've got to poke around anyway may as well have the alarm facility as well.
I'm also getting a bit old in the eyes and value my leisure time too much for making things myself nowadays.

Have made up a breadboard prototype 3 way fridge controller that switches it on and off thermostatically when on 12V. But that's somewhat irrelevant to this thread. Is there a "slapped wrist" smilie?
