Wastegate

Post by Dean » Tue Aug 18, 2009 9:41 am

A month or so ago I wrote about my glowplug light flashing.

After interrogating the ECU it came up with the faultcode 1228, which equates to "Wastegate Failed Open (Under pressure)"

The fitter said there were 2 pipes on the wrong way round and swapped them and indeed the light went out, though it seemed to perform better before he fixed it.

On accelaration there seems to be a "hiss" as though air is escaping from somewhere and it doesn't seem as smooth.

Does this sound right, and what is a wategate and should I be looking at changing it?

Thanks
Dean

The wastegate allows excessive exhaust gas pressure to escape via the 'gate to the exhaust system. This stops the turbo over revving/boosting.

I guess you've got a leak between the turbo and the intake manifold - loose pipe/leaky intercooler...........................
