Smashed window advice - green tint?

Hi bongo owners!

I had a bad day yesterday. I came home to find that our careless gardener had managed to put a stone from a strimmer right through the window of my bongo!! It’s the passenger side window right at the back, the one that clips open and closed. He was very apologetic and has already ordered a replacement through Autoglass - they say that the window has a green tint?

It’s a 1996 diesel auto 2wd, all as standard, green and silver colour. I can’t say I’ve ever noticed a tint on the windows, it must be pretty slight, but to be fair the broken glass is very green in colour! Can anyone confirm this?

Also, any tips for replacement? – looks fairly straight forward to me but any advice appreciated.

This was discussed on here a while back, I think the green over silver bongos should have a slight green tint, but it is difficult to distinguish, try putting a white sheet of paper behind the broken bits.

If you can't get a match from a breaking Bongo (try Bellhill Garage, Bongobits, ebay etc. to see what is out there) then Ian (Bongo Fury) runs a parts sourcing and supply service for new replacement parts (brace yourself for cost of such an item though, unless insurance covers it OK).

The side windows on all bongos are either clear (ie very slight green tint) or privacy glass (ie almost black). Other than that, as far as I am aware , any other colour will be an aftermarket applied tint.
I may be wrong of course .

Thanks all for the advice. Autoglass say they have the part coming in tomorrow - we'll see if it's the right one. Will update you when it's all over!

I think that's the one which doesn't open on account of the sliding door fouling it.

Shouldn't make any difference to the glass supplied, but don't worry if it don't open.

That's a good point, the man at Autoglass said it shouldn't open, but I seem to remember it opening, and if you opened the sliding door it just hit the window and popped it shut again! Or maybe I just imagined it!!!?

You may have imagined it, or someone may have modified it to open? wouldn't think it'd be difficult to do.

mine got broken into a couple of years ago front passenger drop glass and quarterlight both broken and they had a green tint - supplied by autoglass.

Hi all,

I thought I’d tell you what happened in the end – sorry it’s taken me a while to get back on here!

Anyway, we didn’t have the best experience with Autoglass. Firstly, they misquoted on the price – it was originally going to be about £390 I believe (thankfully I wasn’t paying as I didn’t do the damage) but they then apparently said they'd made a mistake and re-quoted at £900 odd!! Believe it. The guy didn't pay it, he argued with them, and got it cheaper I think. Then they completely failed to turn up or even phone on the day they were booked to come, despite me taking time off work, but after some phone calls did promise to come first thing the next day.

When they turned up, thankfully it was the right glass – a slight green tint, with a black border all the way around. As someone said, it is fixed and doesn’t open – I must have imagined that bit from another van I’ve driven sometime!!? The person who came to install was friendly enough, and did a good job - or so I thought, as when I took a look this weekend, the seal down the window on the left between the window and the sliding door, which was removed from the smashed pane and stuck back on the new one, has started to peel off at the sides! So it looks like I’m going to have to get them back under warranty – not that they’ll be able to do much, I reckon, and I could do without the hassle

Autoglass should sort that with no quibbles... Do ya reckon your gardener's price will treble now to make up for the money it's cost him?
