Is it the gearbox? Help

Post by Quackers » Thu Aug 13, 2009 2:46 pm

Hi,

:( Trouble started Monday with no warning. Wouldn't go any higher than 2nd. Had just come of a normal motorway run of 12 miles and was pulling off from the roundabout above. A couple of miles on it wouldn't change up out of 1st! Limped to a side road and waited for the breakdown man.

Checked transmission oil which seemed fine. He took it for spin and it was fine. "get it to a garage to get it checked" Set off the last few miles as this was quicker than waiting the 2 hours for a breakdown truck, but it didn't last long. When I revved hard it wouldn't change up but did if I eased up. As this is now London driving I wasnt too concerned about only having 2 gears. With a softly, softly touch on the accelerator I got home. Got it to a garage the next day who told me that the transmission oil was nearly gone and that it seemed better but will not rev above 2500.

Help please. I just need an idea of what damage has been done or what could be causing it.

Hi Jen, are you saying that the ATF fluid has been replaced, is now on the full mark, and the problem still persists?

Hiya,

Yes they put in 1.5 ltr but I haven't had much chance to test it out but it still isn't going through the gears properly.

I will take it on a long run after work.

If the ATF had almost gone, it'll need a lot more than 1.5 litres. Problem is where did it go?

Off the top of my head i think the capacity is 6.7 litres...so yeah, 1.5 litres won't replenish an almost empty gearbox!

The way the reading of fluid level matters too... I take it the level was checked with the engine running and the gearbox in drive?

would have thought the garage would know how to check but may have a go myself later.

Only advice I'm getting is
1)needs to go to an Auto transmission specialist
2)needs to go to a diesel specialists.

Might not be easy to find a Bonfo friendly garage in South East london.

THIS POST and THIS POST give useful advice on changing/checking the ATF.

Have you looked in the members area? there's a list of bongo friendly garages.

We've just had the fluid changed - took about 5 litres apparently. It's a lot smoother now.

It could well be the oil is manky - even if it looks ok, may be worth dropping it all out (or sucking it out with a pela pump) then dropping the pan & giving it a good clean. My oil looked fine, but was starting to feel a bit "lumpy" on changes, I was shocked to see how manky the sump pan was - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... earbox+oil
Was yours showing any other signs before it gave up, lumpiness on change, or anything else?
I wonder if this could be a TPS issue? Has the Hold light or glowplug light been flashing at all? possibly worth checking for gearbox fault codes & engine diagnostics - "how to" in the fact sheets in the members area.

Thanks for all the replies.

It has been suggested by a garage regularly services Bongos that it may be a fuel problem. On their suggestion I tested out how high the revs go in park and all I got was 2800.

Step one - Where is the fuel filter?
Please don't say members area as mine has just run out and I'm leaving the UK in a couple of weeks so have not renewed.

Which brings me to my other problem. Need to sell it but how do I sell a faulty Bongo?

Fuel filter under the drivers seat.dont forget to disconect the wire from the bottom of the filter, and then reconect the new one on the new filter.
Lost without my Bongo.

Check the banjo filter on the fuel pump too.
Selling a bongo that doesn't work isn't going to be easy, you'll have to take a big hit on price, if you can get someone to buy it, as it could potentially be an expensive fix.

Hi,

Cheers Dave and Kirsty

Will get both filters checked.

Don't mind a drop on price if I had any interest. Was about to start advertising when this happened. Have no idea as yet what to do if not sold before I leave. Usual rust popping out everywhere but I love it to bits and would never be selling. Can't exactly park it on a Dutch Barge and we aren't going to be staying in one place.

So if anyone is interested PM me.
