Sony head units and suspected leisure battery draining

Guess I was blindy accepting yet another bit of suspected misinformation I was told about the coolbox from salesperson “yes these are really good you should get a few days out of these from the leisure battery’. But that was also when I went to pick up the bongo expecting the l/b to be linked to the main battery for recharging, but it was only connected to ………… a wee solar panel on the dashboard as it’s only means of charge….which I suspect was just not suitable whatsoever for what we wanted it for.

Another thing to add to my list of post purchase snags I can’t do much about now!

Mind you, he’s still adamant about the fact I should get longer out of the coolbox than I do, but hasn’t come up with any more ‘solutions’ - I’ve learned to accept some of the stuff said with a bit of a pinch of salt. Bitter, me, no…… I’ll some ranting.

Given the most recent response I guess it’s maybe not worth rushing to add a switch to the wiring given the lack of time I have between now and leaving – will just have to plug into the other sockets as much as poss when driving.

Will check the coolbox labelling later.

Not sure if you've got anything to hook up to mains with (or indeed whether you ever intend to be hooking up to the mains) but we use one of these to keep the coolbox going when we have 240v electrickery available

Don't use hookup when at home but coolbox has both 12/240v connectors so will be using that a bit when overseas.

Going by stringman’s note in above post above, I can’t remember ever getting a beep to remind you to take the facia off when we switch the unit off with the OFF button…..and not sure if mine has a dip switch to switch it off completely.

If the sony head unit is wired into the Leisure battery, then you won't get the warning beeps to remove the faceplate as the power to the stereo hasn't been interupted by switching off the ignition. Try holding the OFF button for 5 or 6 seconds to you get a confirmation "off" beep... The unit should then be completely off. Your switched live connection should be wired into the main battery,not the switched live on the ignition, as every time the ignition is switched off, the power to the memory is lost.

I've got a Sony DAB stereo & also experience problems with the leisure and / or main battery going flat. I did seem to notice an improvement when taking the faceplate off, as otherwise it has a load of stuff scrolling along the display when the ignition is switched off. Will try the trick of holding the power button in for a bit longer to see if that works. I've put a relay in so that the radio can either run from the switched ignition feed, or permanently from the leisure battery. I think I've left the live feed connected to the main battery when I probably should have got that to switch over too, otherwise it is taking power from both batteries.

Interesting that so many fellow Sony owners are also having these sorts of problems. I would have thought in this day & age that the presets would be stored in a non-volatile memory so would retain them without any permanent feed. My DAB radio at home can be left unplugged from the mains for months & all the settings & channels will still be there when next used.
