Wheel Arches Rusting

Hi all

The rear wheel arches on my Bongo have started to blister, I had a cheap job done last year and they are bubbling again, my fault, you get what you pay for. I have decided to get the job done properly and to get the sills done at the same time.

Any suggestions on the best course, ie do I get the rusting parts cut out and replaced or simply rubbed down properly and repainted, and is there such a thing as a replacement arch available, whether rubber or metal. I am based in Northants, so if anyone can recommend anywhere to do this, your help will be greatly appreciated

Mine are doing the same unfortunately.. I think its pretty common on the northern Bongo. I'm going to have a go on mine next spring when I have a bit more time and to be honest it'll probably come back but I won't have to spend hundreds doing it. The only proper way of doing it will be to cut all the rust out and re-weld new in. You pay your money and take your choice.

Some have cut out the offending rusty arches, and replaced with sound S/H arches from a breaker bongo... Maybe Haydn will post up his pics of his arch job? Very comprehensive pics on how to from him...

Hi,
I've got the same problem with Scoobie. It's been suggested that I contact Ian - i'm probably being a bit slow but I can't work out how to do that??

I'm really scared of getting stung on this financially - I feel my complete lack of knowledge will put me at a disadvantage.
Anyone know of a trustworthy body shop that might take on such a task - in South wales

Rear wheel arches are on the way (from Malaysia) and we will publish details on main website, together with list of body shops who can undertake the work, when they arrive.

I've just patched up mine by sanding back to the metal, primed using some hammerite antirust primer, sanded back again and filled the any fine holes with Spat O Rapid, sanded off, re-primed with spray, then dusted with top coat and then clear laquer. Very pleased with the job really and the colour match - the key seems to be doing a bit of overpsraying then cutting back with polishing compound to get a nice blended match. I imagine that I'll be lucky to get another year out of them before they need replacing or re-doing, but didn't cost me anything as I had all the paint etc in. I do need to do a couple of points on the bottom colour skirt - that I didn't have, so will finish that when the paint arrives.

I cleaned off the inside of the arches too and primed and resealed with waxoil underseal.

Sounds a good job. I'll be v. interested to hear how long it lasts as I still can't believe that a well prepped job can't go for quite some time. Fingers crossed for you

Its in paint at the moment so more pics soon.
Had the arches made by a local metelwork company after giving them a template and profile of sills
if its all a sucsess they may produce sills in 1metre lengths
The made em of 1mm steel so should last.

With so many people needing rusty wheelarches replaced & people wanting the wheel arch spats/trims or whatever you want to call them, is someone not going to bit the bullet & get some wheelarches sorted that have a bigger flare on them? Kill two birds with one stone? making sure they don't foul on the sliding door of course
