A battery question

Please could anyone help?

We are going to be in the van tomorrow with hook up.
We have a leisure battery but nothing exotic (no willington or what have you)

If we are hooked up and have the cricket on the radio will it drain the main battery or will the hook up keep it topped up?
You see the radio in the van has LW and our portable doesn't, our DAB portable only lasted a few months (cost a blimmin' fortune too)

If I listen to cricket and result in a flat battery I will NEVER hear the end of it.

It will use some power - the louder you have it, the more you'll use, How long are you envisaging it being on? does the LB charge from the engine at all? Are you on hook up? could ou use a battery charger to keep it topped up if necessary?

I have no idea if the LB charges from the engine I assume so.
The electrical socket only works on hook up, but I think it powers the lights at the back.

As for how long it would be on - that depends on how quickly the Aussies thrash us

Do you think I'd better not risk it then??

As you're on hook up, see if you can borrow a charger just in case, but if it's just the LB, it shouldn't matter too much if it does run down, you'll still be able to start ok Go for it & blame me

Or you can simply start the engine and have it on tickover for 15 minutes or so to charge the leisure battery

That's assuming the battery is on the LB of course rereading the original post - you don't seem sure. Easy enough to check, disconnect the LB & if the stereo doesn't work it's powering the LB.

Just what I was going to ask..

Unless we know which battery the radio runs off (mine runs off the main battery, not the leisure one) we can't say which one will get flattened.

I can tell you from bitter experience on traffic counts that a radio uses quite a bit of power and if your radio works off the main battery and your main battery isn't in top condition and the Aussies don't win too easily - you could be in bigger trouble than the cricketers.

Your worry is just who/what gets flattened soonest.................

Make sure you have some jump leads.

I'm sure the stereo runs off the main battery which is quite new. I take it hook up doesn't charge up the main battery then (sorry if this seems a silly question...)

I may end up turning the radio off in despair anyway (there's only so many 4s and 6s our bowlers can give away before I get upset )

Hook up probably won't charge either battery if you've only got a simple system, hence the suggestion to take a battery charger you can plug into the mains keeping the battery topped up as you use it.

It sounds like I'd better give the cricket a miss -rather than risk having the radio on for 6 hours

We used to have a little battery transistor radio (about £4 from Asda) but you just can't get them now.

If we see any other Bongos in North Devon we will give you a wave

I'm still lost on this anyway - I don't need to have the radio on to hear the crickets, all I do is open the window or door - in fact if I have the radio on I can't hear the crickets for the noise of some old fart droning on about balls, wickets, overs and runs (whatever they are?).

I used to live 10 mins walk from the University Cricket Ground in Oxford and in the summer used to walk down there after school with a cricket mad schoolfriend (now President of Oxfordshire CCC ) and watch all the greats from the 60's Trueman, May, Shepherd etc. (as well as that grumpy old rsole Brian Close) for free - it's one of only 2 or 3 venues in the world you can watch what is referred to as "First Class Cricket" for free.

You don't need to listen to it to find out what is going to happen. It will follow the normal flow of things.....
England look OK but they will lose - always happens, except for last year (was it?) and that was a complete fluke.
Save your battery for more important things - listen to some Status Quo, P.Floyd, etc for example.
