Charge and Sediment with fluctuating temp needle???

Post by Lewy » Tue Jul 28, 2009 6:52 pm

The lastest blip on the Bongo front.

I've noticed my MAson damped temp gauge moving a bit more erratically over the last few weeks - as well as slow climbs and falls it also does the the occasional jump back and forwards and sometimes peeps for no reason. This seems to correspond with brief and intermitent charge and sediment bulbs flashing on with varying degrees of brightness. The engine temp on the TM2 reads as 'normal' - although I'm changing the stat tomorrow.

I know that these bulbs on the dash can mean alternator so having already replaced one, I checked the voltage across the battery terminals on tick over and it reads a healthy 14.1v

So any ideas on what this might be? Possible faulty Mason alarm? Temp sensor from the block? Alternator or earth? Or just another personality of the Bongo beast?

Check the connection from the three wires going into the back of the temp dial if the needle is fluctuating & the Mason gives the test peep? It could mean the Mason is not quite connected & is turning off & on again..?

Another one right off the top of my head earth strap & battery connections..?
Cheaper by comparison to a race horse...

When we bought our bongo we were told that if the temp gauge jumps a bit like you are indicating then it could mean an air bubble in your coolant.....but don't trust what I say as I don't have a clue what I'm talking about - just passing on something that I was told by an importer.... I'd go with other answer you'll no doubt get here!

Pretty sure there are no coolant airlocks. Will check the earth strap though and its possible that the Mason might have come a bit loose from the back of the circuit board - but doubtful. I wonder if the Mason alarms get a bit twitchy as they get older?

Will check battery connections tomorrow.
