Another hose gone.... Aldi to the rescue!

Today I was planning on fixing my ARB bushes and front drop links but my car had other ideas, just dropping one of the kids off to the swimming pool and the Mason alarm suddenly went doolally. I stopped and looked under the car to find a small drip coming down the left side of the engine, luckily there was an Aldi nearby, so I topped up with 25p's worth of cool clear mountain water and got home!

The pipe that is leaking is a narrow bore one that comrs from the top of the engine to a metal pipe attached to the chassis. it's only about 10ins long but is quite curved. can anyone identify this so I can order the right part, or would I be OK walking down to Halfords and getting a generic pipe?

Did a bodge repair in the end, but did get a pm from flippa who has identified the culprit hose and has given me a very good price on that and the one behind it that also looks a bit dodgy...

If you started to overheat to the extent that the Mason Alarm went off and then Just Topped up with water you could now be sitting on a very expensive "time bomb"
To have lost enough coolant to set the alarm off you will have "trapped" air in the system by just topping up.
If you know how to bleed this air out,then do this asap.
If not...do not drive anywhere ...get the hose replaced and MAKE SURE the garage or yourself bleed the system properly..

As a general point for any Bongo owner: always carry a roll of suitable repair tape to get you out of a situation if a pipe does leak. This stuff is amazing http://www.rescuetape.com/ as it will provide a water-tight seal to pretty much any sort of hose or pipe.

As Haydn has mentioned, if the level drops such that any air has got in the system, a full bleed is required. Also worth carrying a print out of the bleed procedure in case you need to get to call a recovery service or non-Bongo-friendly garage to fix it.

My advice to anyone with a Bongo is if you dont know the 'hose' history then replace them all - along with the thermostat and water pump (and if in doubt the radiator)....and not forgetting the combined engine temp and coolant alarm which are absolutely essential. Then refill and bleed as described on this site.
Not cheap I grant you, but given the potential grief and additional expense you could be in for it has got to be worth the investment (and peace of mind).

Thanks for the info Haydn, the 'top up' at aldi's just got me 2 miles home where I chopped the hose down and bled the system, I've been through front and rear radiator hoses and a new radiator before this happened so I'm getting quite good at it now! The only thing I've not done properly yet is replace the lost coolant, as I've yet to open up the system again to fit the new silicone hoses. I'm pretty confident the the mason alarm went off in time because it went off for no longer than it normally takes me to lift off the throttle to stop it when I'm going up a steep hill, when I stopped there were no 'kettle' type noises coming from the cooling system and I was able to remove the expansion tank lid after about 5 minutes with no effect.

I do second the suggestion to change hoses as a matter of course, if they're all the same age it makes sense that if one goes the rest are sure to follow!

And yes, one day I'll get a coolant loss alarm

- it doesn't show the offending pipe - you need the rear heater pipework schematic, http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsm ... mgno=.html part no 61-214 - 3 different designs of pipe - one for each engine type - diesel, v6 petrol & 2l petrol.
