It definitely sounds like the idle control valve. In 'D' stopped with you foot on the brake there is some load on the engine that is not there when in 'P'. That could easily be enough to cause the problem you describe.

I cleaned the fuel injection system on my son's ancient Golf to solve a similar problem. I'd never touched a fuel injection system before, but it was easy. And it worked.

I reckon so Mike - it does nothing to cure the actual fault, just masks it.

I know dude, mind you on the old cars it was sometimes nothing more or less than a need to adjust the tickover per se 8)

Yes Mike, but that was in the carburettor days. Shouldn't be necessary in today's computer controlled engines.

Fixing rough idle on a 2500cc V-6: finally fixed!

Post by twinrider » Fri Jul 24, 2009 2:42 am

A couple years back I posted about a rough idling problem in this now-locked thread.
http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 43&start=0

Finally got the issue resolved. It turned out that one of the leads in the distributor cap was broken. A new distributor cap, a fresh set of spark plugs and she's running as good as new! :)

Good news... that job took a while. :) Without knowing the service history, it sounds like one of those jobs that you have to go through one step at a time until you have solved the problem. (We found the old thread via your link and merged it for you, so all the info is in one place now 8) ).

It took so long to fix because I just kept procrastinating till the problem got too annoying to ignore. The solution came by asking my Mazda mechanic of all people   He recommended changing the spark plugs and at that time discovered the broken distributor cap!

Thanks for merging the thread.
