Overheating problem

Post by fairly_odd » Sun Jul 12, 2009 12:09 pm

Our bongo has just started up with an overheating problem, having to stop and let it cool down.
Any tips on where we can start to try identify the problem?
We were just impressed that last week it flew through the MOT, was hoping to get a short spell on less abuse on the bank balance, our other car just needed a fair bit of work on it

Is it losing coolant anywhere? have you topped it up? how much? have you bled it properly as per the factsheets in the members area? Have you got a coolant level alarm or a Mason alarm fitted?
Check all your hoses etc for leaks, get a sniffer test done on the header tank to see if there are exhaust gases in the coolant.

You really need to give us some of the info that Kirsty requested before we can advise further. There are many causes for overheating, loss of coolant being the main one.

Did MOT station undo radiator cap (rather than header tank cap) to check coolant level or mixture? If so, air could have got into the system and blown the gasket/etc.

thanks for the replies, i've been going on what my hubby has said cause he's been driving it recently as he's been doing it up ready to paint.
first he has checked the coolant and we dont appear to be loosing any. its possible that the mot station undid the cap so maybe let air in. i'm not sure if he's bled it and we don't have an alarm fitted.
hubby has said when its been overheating he's been turning on the heating in the van and therefore taking heat away from the engine, it appears to be helping as it was fine yesterday. today its in the garage getting a check over, thermostat etc

well seems to be fixed now, it was a leak from the water pump and a deteriorated hose that was leaking too. there was a little air in but as i said, been running a week now with no further problems :D
