exhaust winter switch valve thingy- working or not ?

hi all

can any one tell me how you know if the exhaust valve switch is working or not ?

is there any noise when pressed ?

does the engine shudder ?

i cant say mine does any of the above

but when i did 1st get my bongo , i must admit i played around with all the switches etc, and the exhaust switch got played with a few times........

after reading a long time ago , that it might get jammed, ive never touched it since

but i accidently knocked it on a few weeks back, and switched it off when i noticed

thing is ive noticed some crappy mpg return, all round town, and short distances...

yep bingo, ive probably said it all with the usage

always seems 30 mpg on a decent run

but my question is ?? how do you know if it is stuck --open / closed or if it is operating normally ?

would appreciatte any feedback

When ours was stuck on the main thing that we noticed very poor mpg (18mpg!)

They don't all have one but are commonly on the 'cold climate' twin battery (as standard) bongos/fredas. If yours has it you'll have a switch (with an engine picture) by your right knee. The switch illuminates in the 'on' position.

if they are all in the same position. it is a switch with an engine pic on it with a light.

it is located on the right hand side near ignition barrel.

mine has the winter pack ( twin batteries ) but i dont know if its just the winter pack bongo,s that have this

must admit i dont get any loss of power, but the whistle thing is a concern, but ive put that down to the turbo or maybe a manifold stud

but not that bad to be concerned with

the trouble is when you read something on the forum, sometimes you tend to look for things and relate them.........

Just picking up on this thread, I want to ask the peeps in the know a question, lol...under the bonnet is the air intake, some bongos have the little lever to switch between summer and winter, well mine doesn't, it has the metal rod sticking out but no lever and it doesnt move, now I have taken off the cover and behind it in the channel I can see a large flap which is directing the air downwards, is this the normal position or not It doesnt seem to want to move so I assume it is, any views. Cheers.

I take it you have the digital climate control then David, rather than the manual sliders & rotary controlled air con/heaters?
Mine's the same, little metal bit sticking out that does nowt - it's normal.

ahh yes I have one of those buttons, I have never turned it on though, I assume it's best left off??

Andyb36, I asked similar question few months ago search for 'Cold start exhaust system' . I think if device is working properly it partialy blocks exhaust when idling but opens when revs rise a bit so might not make much difference unless you are in town driving a lot. If it jams open then it shouldn't be problem but if jams closed then you might hear whistling sound from exhaust and fuel consumption will be high all of time, about 17mpg.
