Strange noises...

Post by diggs31 » Tue Jun 30, 2009 7:40 pm

Hey guys...when I'm driving and I turn the wheel to the right I get a loose metal sound coming from the rear wheel, I think (might be the front) it doesn't happen when I turn left, just right. It sounds like something is loose, like a metal on metal rattling sound...any Ideas??
and also when I start her up there is a noise like a belt is slipping, only on tick over not when I rev it...where should I look first?
appreciate any help,
fraser

Does the noise go if you touch the brakes?
What type of engine have you got?

Hi mate...i can't say i have noticed if the noise disappears if i touch the brakes cos im usually going round a corner..so not to sure on that one. Its just like a tinkling sound...My engine is a 2.5 diesel 2WD. I have just spoken to my dad and he reckons the problem that I figured was a squeeky belt might be the water pump...I have just noticed that i am losing water from the radiator header tank so could this be the cause? I see fitting a new one doesn't seem to much trouble (even for a novice like me) or should i try to fix it first?...
I do appreciate all the advice you give me,

Brake pads can make funny noises when going around corners, especially if there's a little wear in the wheel bearings. next time it happens, just lightly apply the brakes to see if the sound stops. If not, we can think deeper
If you're losing water, it could well be the water pump - you should be able to see it leaking. It's not a difficult job, but you MUST make sure that you bleed the system properly afterwards.
