Does anyone know if there is a compatible new engine which can be retro-fitted into the Bongo?

How much bodgery would be needed to swap the necessary electrickery over as well?

That new 3 litre Ranger engine has a fair punch though.

Interesting to see if it were possible to just graft a top end on.

A nice new DCi engine would be good, given that ours needs another fitting. It's just whether it's worth the cost and effort involved over fitting a reconditioned Bongo engine.

It's going to be interesting over the next few years to see how people modify, restore and improve the bongo. Particularly as bongos get older, rustier etc..

I guess that someone will break the bubble on this and buy one that needs a new engine and shoe horn something in.

Go back 20 years or so and the custom van scene was massive - V8 in Bedford CF's etc..

It was so much easier in those days, no ECU's or such to try and graft into a non-compatible wiring loom.
A new Ranger engine will no doubt need all sorts of readings from all sorts of sensors a Bongo probably hasn't got.

If you are going to that much trouble, I'd go for a 150bhp BMW 320D engine and 6 speed auto box.

I have fitted alsorts of engines in to landrovers if my bongo dies ill fit a 200tdi landrover engine no ecu required just starter circut and power to solenoid you just manufacture a bell housing and fit the bongo auto fly wheel to the landrover then bodge some engine mounts you can boil a disco motor all day long bit less power but im in no rush

I'm not sure what engine we have in our new Landrovers at work, but they have so much torque. They are quicker than the V8's we used to have to play with. I have a feeling they may be BMW based but I am sure they would be great in a Bongo.

Yes since 2007

From Spring 2007 a series of long-anticipated changes were made to the Defender, most of which were implemented to meet emissions and safety legislation. The biggest change was to the drivetrain. The Td5 engine was replaced by an engine from Ford's DuraTorq line, built in their factory in Dagenham, making the Td5 the last Land Rover engine to be built in-house at Solihull. The engine chosen was from the ZSD family, being a version of the 2.4 litre four-cylinder unit also used in the highly successful Ford Transit.

The thing to look for is a "marinised" one designed to be fitted in a boat. They come complete with dedicated ECU packs that don't need the rest of the loom etc.

What about the cooling system ? Would it need much in the way of specially fabricated pipes /alternative rad ?
