Could it be one of the belts slipping?

Could have been I suppose.
They look to be adjusted OK

Is there a reason why a belt should slip only under load ?

Like any worn out component, i would imagine it's failings would become more apparent under duress & continue to progress...
It's worth taking a closer look, not everybody's sense of smell is the same!

I do a fair bit of touring in Europe, and have the same problem. If I leave it in drive on mountain passes, I get the clutch burning type smell?
I just use the gearbox or hold button, and no more problems.

Does one have to take the trans fluid level with the engine at tickover? I only ask cos all my other auto boxes did.
