Dodgy Oil Filters

I've just fitted one and deposited a load of oil on the drive. Not Happy. Might take it back to the motor factor for a refund, but not happy

Replaced it tonight with a Blueprint ADC42105 so hopefully all will be well tomorrow. It's a good job my yrdy drive was short and circular, so I was almos6t home when the bloody thing failed.

Didn't this type of filter have failuresd a few years ago as well?

Best avoided in future.

No, it was Comline filters previously (CMB11321).

Is the filter failing or coming off at the threads?

It's failing. Problem with the seal I think.

Replaced my Fram with a blueprint version which is working fine. Been away for the weekend to Durdle Door and all seems well.

I fitted the Fram filter without using a strap wrench. I usually make it hand tight then don the rubber gardening gloves and grab it with both hands and give it another half turn. This has always worked in the past, but as I did it this time I did feel that the tightening didn't feel very progressive. When I removed it, it took much less effort than I would have expected, so although it was still hand tight, that could be why it was leaking.

Blueprint filter mwas much more progressive as it tightened, used a strap wrench just to be sure.

It's all a bit subjective, and I was panicking to get the Bongo ready for the weekend, but I think the oil was coming out at such a rate that I would suspect seal failure. Even though it could have been tighter, I would expect it to be dripping rather than flooding out.

Maybe that's why the seal is failing - the filter should ONLY be hand tight and no more. The seal needs to be oiled before fitting too.

Maybe the amateurs are fitting the filter dry and horsing it up tight, damaging the seal

Not guilty there I'm afraid.

Why did you say you used a strap wrench then.................

Greenman says he DIDN'T use a strap wrench scanner - time to get yer eyes tested I think

I still wouldn't force it another half turn whatever colour the gloves are...........

I had a leaky oil filter on another car a few years back. When I had fitted, I must have caught the rubber seal on the threaded spiggot when I was locating it (poor access). The slightly dislodged it from it recess. When I started it to carry out the leak check... it leaked Anyway, I inspected the seal and it was nadgered as a result so I popped the old seal in the new filter and all was well.
