rear anti - roll bar bushes question

Post by aitch » Sat Jun 06, 2009 6:59 pm

Advisory from MOT that all the rear anti-roll bar bushes are worn and will need replacing - is this a straight forward job to do myself?

are there any problems I need to know about before starting?

How many bushes are there?

Do I need to jack up the Bongo and are axle stands required?
Be nice to everyone they might be nice back.

Come to the dark side we have chocolate dark chocolate

There are two bushes, each held on with a u-shape bracket. You should replace bushes and brackets. Available ffrom Bongobits, or off ebay (where I got mine) or The Bongo Shop.

You ought really to make sure the suspension is symetrically loaded. So either on the ground (but v hard to get underneath), or on ramps, or on axle stands.

Its a very easy job PROVIDED the bolts on the u-brackets aren't badly rusted on. Put suitable penetrating fluid on them and leave to soak. Use a 6-sided socket (the star type don't purchase as well and may slip and strip) and have an extension bar as you may need good leverage to loosen them if they are seized.

You can see the rear antiroll bar curving over the propshaft in this pic. One of the retaining brackets and bush is visible on the straight section to the left of the propshaft (click to enlarge)

Fingers crossed it goes well. 8)
