Our Bongo's had an intermittent overheating with coolant loss over last couple of weeks, since we did an oil and filter change... (there's a clue there).
First we suspected the thermostat. Ordered and fitted new one, bled it all. Away we went.
You may have spotted us parked-up in a sideroad in Stanmore on Saturday afternoon waiting for it to cool so we could refill it (and we checked the new thermostat and found it wide-open so definitely working), and once we were driving again, it overheated again on the A40 westbound just short of Uxbridge so we were parked-up there for an hour as we looked underneath, were aghast to see water dripping down from underneath of engine ...........
it was a split hose. The one on driver's side near the fuel filter ... which we'd given a damn good wiggling to as we fitted the new fuel filter 2 weeks ago.
So it wasn't overheating at all, it was complaining that it had lost all its water. No wonder the water wasn't circulating, there wasn't any to circulate. Didn't notice when parked on driveway at home with that big bit of plastic cover on undernath as that would just act like a bucket and catch it all. (We'd left the plastic off, in case it overheated again on Saturday on our journey from Cambridge to Lambourn).
So mystery solved and Bongo fine. (phew!)
PS Farncombe Farm is a delightful, idyllic, peaceful 5-van site nestling in the Lambourn valley, well well worth a visit if you want to chill out and be undisturbed.

Re: intermittent overheating solved
Frightening - a miracle you didn't end up with a cracked cylinder head! Have you made plans to fit a Low Coolant Alarm as - from what you say - that would have prevented what happened....and much worse.
But great it is all sorted now and you are back on the road.
Very beautiful and prosperous part of the world is Lambourn (not arf!)

Re: intermittent overheating solved
I think you will find it was in fact overheating....No coolant = overheating.....have you bled it again since you last had a problem ???
