lights & ignition

Post by Colin H F » Sat May 16, 2009 2:59 pm

Hi all, when I got my bongo in Feb this year I posted "why do my side lights come on when the ignition is switched on" well I have just found out that when I switch the ignition off while the engine is running and my lights are on, the engine carries on running untill I switch the lights off, also when I open the doors with my key in the ignition the bleeper sounds, so I was wondering if there is a fault or that these things have been incorperated as a safety feature. would be interested to find out if any one else has similar querks. A key in the ignition will make the beep when the drivers door is opened, this can be easily sorted by cutting the white wire to the relay.
Lost without my Bongo.

Will it drive with the lights on & the key out, or does it cut out? sounds like it's somehow wired in with the stop solenoid - god knows why, but it may be a starting point to finding a cure.

When you switch the ignition off and the engine carries on running, does everything else normally controlled by the ignition (ie car radio etc) switch off or carry on working too?

(What I'm thinking is if the illumination wire for the radio has been wired wrongly it maybe putting a feed up the ignition wire and holding the ignition on when the sidelights are switched on)

update. when I turn the ignition off while side or headlights are on, the engine carries on running but all other fuctions stop, radio, windows, wipers, gear selector etc; I dont know how long it would run for and I dont know about a turbo timer. Colin newbie

I've got a turbo timer fitted, it allows the engine to keep running for a pre-set length of time after the keys have been removed, something to do with letting the turbo slow down while the engine is idling I think.
Mine has a small box at the side of the steering column which has buttons and a LED readout which set the idling period, if yours hasn't got something like that, then I dont think it'll have a timer.

No I haven`t got anything like that , and if I had surely it would kick in if the lights were on or off. Colin

In which case I think missfixit is on the right lines with it being a problem with the stop solenoid as this malfunctioning is really the only reason the engine will carry on running with the ignition off unless the vehicle has been fitted with run locks. This is actually a possibility if it came from a cold area of Japan. It may have been wired like this so they could leave the engine running while in the shops without leaving the keys in :?: (We wire fire officers cars similairly to this so their batteries don't go flat when they leave their blue lights on when attending an incident.)
