1st bongo just collected - 1st question now posted!
Hi all - just collected 1st bongo (after 3 yrs with an '85 autosleeper renualt camper) - and am loving it! All going very well with my '97 diesel 2wd - just wanted to check opinions on the following: on first start up in the mornings rattly for 5-10 seconds with white smoke and then begins to tick over nicely and no smoke (drives fine) - does that sound ok? I realise I'm sitting on the engine which might be why I 'feel' it. Also when I turn the engine off I can 'feel' it stop! Again, maybe because I'm on top of the engine? Just like your opinions as I haven't sat in another bongo to compare......many thanks in advance, Rob

I can feel mine running, and on start and stop.
Had not noticed the white smoke though, except on one occasion when I failed to carry out the correct start up procedure.
An expert will probably be along soon, in the meantime
DONT DRIVE IT
Only joking
about the driving bit.

Hi welcome to the forum and congrats on the bongo
start by reading this link and put your location in your profile

as for the start up is it using any coolant?
or it could be the fuel filter or Banjo filter

It's not compulsory to put your location in of course.
For reasons of security you may not wish to.
It does help if you need some local help of course, so weigh up the pros and cons

hello and welcome
You don't have to be specific about your profile either...you know...England, or Wales or if you're brave a county!! - But Kelvfarrel is right...it's your choice.
Can't answer the techie question...watch this space...

second it with the glowplugs. leave the ignition on till you hear a dull clunk at the front of the bongo before starting, thats the glowplug relay.then try starting it, see if thats any better. they arnt to bad to change if ones gone duff but there are two different lengths it could be.

Sounds very much like glowplugs to me, esp. as you mention its only 1st startup of the day (a classic symptom). As Dreamwarrior says, wait till you hear a click when turning ignition on (also the orange warning light on the dash should go out) before engaging the starter motor.
Diesel Bongos do judder on startup and shutdown (well mine does, newer ones are, I have noticed, rather smoother sounding so maybe less juddery too)

I would put my money on the three above answers.

thanks all - if I post this twice then excuse my bad mouse clicking. As a non mechanic can anyone recommend bongo friendly garages/mechanics in the Plymouth area? Thanks in advance, Rob

Now that's a relief. I heard the clunk for the first time the other day and thought there was something desperately wrong with the Bongo (mine always starts beautifully once the light has gone out so I didn't spend that much time fretting because it was running fine, and hasn't done it again since - now I'm going to worry that it shoulddreamwarrioruk wrote:leave the ignition on till you hear a dull clunk at the front of the bongo before starting, thats the glowplug relay

Anyway, welcome, Rob. You're going to have lots of fun with the Bongo. Why don't you come along to Cardinham on 31st May and then you get to know a some very friendly locals and can pick a few more brains in person http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 34&t=31235
