There's 3 things you can do and if done properly, you should do them in this order really I think:

1) If doing the job properly, the first thing is to adjust up the cam inside the brake drum. You do this by removing teh real wheels and using a screwdriver (from memory) to adjust it until the brake lining just binds then backing it off sligthly so the brake doesnt bind

2) Adjust up the turnbuckle on the cable underneath the car - you should see it easily when you get underneath

3) Adjusting the turnbuckle under the cover of the hanbrake lever at the base end

Hope this helps. Say if you need more detailed guidance and I'll dig out the workshop manual

I did mine recently during a check change of linings..... the "star" adjuster is clicked up on the nearside and down on the offside (see fact sheet for the jack up etc. procedure) - The monkey who tried to adjust my handbrake had clicked the adjuster on the nearside down like the offside and locked up the mechanism - a quick strip down, released and grease did the trick - 3 clicks and the wheels are locked now..... =D> - how it passed the last MOT..... Not wanting to nit pick or anything Mike, but I'm sure in the handbook it says something like 8 or 9 clicks? can't be bothered going out to check, but I'm sure I read that last week. Could be wrong though
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.
