Stereo / Cigarette lighter fuse?

Post by apapa » Mon May 04, 2009 5:51 pm

I was trying to get our new cool box working. There was no power coming out of either of the cigarette lighters. Immediately after that the stereo stopped working. Again there was no power.

Could the two be related? Is it as easy as changing the fuses or do I need to take it to an auto electrician?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Could also be that wiring isn't up to "firing" up the coolbox, they Peltier ones are very high wattage (48w and 98 amps per day) - A Waeco fridge is less wattage (38w & 12 amps per day) and needs at least 3 amps to "kick" the compressor on - so if the fuse is ok, check your wiring

It is an Outwell cool box. I thought they were low power consumption.

I will take it to a garage to have a quick look.

Thanks for the help

The same fuse should also work your power mirrors. Its a 15amp fuse as far as I remember, and any cool box designed for vehicular use shouldn't draw any more than (or near) that. Remember these things are designed for the power consumption of a bit of coiled metal that wants to glow red hot.

the wires behind the ciggy socket's are not up to the job, very thin and there have been a few problems with them blowing the fuse and even the wire melting.
better to replace with heavier wire if you can.
you are talking about 15 year old vehicles that were built for transport not camping.

I have found the number 8 fuse. It is indeed blown. I will buy a new one today and replace it?

Do you think it will just blow again if I use the fridge? Is it an expensive job to replace the wire behind the lighter?

It is really useful to have the 12V power for phone chargers / pumps etc. So I would like to get it working.

Thanks for your help.

Replacing the wiring loom wont stop the fuse from blowing. The wiring loom is coping with the current that is being drawn through it, its the fuse that's blowing. You need to know how many watts the fridge is drawing, divide this by 12 (volts) and the answer is how many amps you are using. Go to the following link, http://www.simetric.co.uk/si_watts.htm and have a read, there is also a conversion tool that you can download. If your fridge works out at more than 15amps don't go putting in a bigger fuse because that's when the wires start to melt.

If you fancy a run out to Aylesbury I could rewire this for you for the cost of the bits.

I'm a bit hectic with a big carphone contract at the moment so it may be a couple of weeks though.

I mended the fuse and it is working again.

Thanks for your help.

I would definitely come out to Aylesbury to get it sorted. I will PM you to sort out details.

Thanks
