Occasional squeek from front nearside wheel when driving

Post by thedogsbollox » Sun May 03, 2009 9:50 pm

I have always had squeeky brakes when braking but lately i have noticed, with the window down, that when driving i get the occasional squeek from the front nearside disk. This can be heard easier with a little shaking of the steering wheel, Would this be an indication of the wheel bearing on its way out?

Your more likely to experience a deep rumbling sound at around 40 MPH if it was the bearing. The disc could be warped a little, and the low pad is catching the disc slightly...Brakes are more likely to squeak the hotter they are, (the disc that is warped will be marginally hotter due to excessive friction) In addition, you may have the type of pads with a "wear indicator" section near the base of the pad...this is a warning that your pads are about to wear out.

Can't quite remember, but didn't someone have similar symptoms recently and that turned out to be a stone or summat caught in the disc assembly?

Yeah, that can make em squeal too mike, but that usually clears with a hard application of the brakes at speed (like a late braking episode off a motorway slip road)

You remember this one Steve - amazingly, they had to remove calipers and pads to fix it. I recall being surprised it was necessary but....

Thanks, sounds like it is not much to worry about. MOT at the end of the month should tell me if there is anything serious going.
