Clear film on side mirrors

Post by Bertie.. » Mon May 04, 2009 4:25 pm

Hi guys,

When I bought my Bongo last year it came with a square of clear film on each of the side mirrors. I've tried to get this off today to no avail with a hairdryer to warm it up, hoping that it would peel off easier.

Has anyone else come across this before, and how have you removed these clear films?

many thanks with this!

Cheers

I've heard of yellow film on the headlights, but the clear film on the mirrors is a new one to me...I wonder if it's lacquer from a previous paintjob/touch up? My inclination would be to use thinners on it,,,dodgey ground that though, it'll soften the paint on the mirror housing if you aren't carefull with it...It'd be safer to remove the actual glass methinks...

Sorry, should have said that it's definitely a plastic of some sort, looks like a plastic sticker rather than anything else.

I think it's applied to try to stop the mirrors misting? It's usually pretty well stuck and sorry, we've never had to remove it.

Had this on mine and had to remove it when it became too scratched to see what was behind me properly - how I did it was by getting a craft knife blade under the edge of the film and trying to lift it - if like mine you will find the film is brittle and it will come off in little bits - I cleaned the adhesive that was left on the mirror with white spirit - it does take time - so be patent - it took me about 4 hours over 2 days but it was worth it. Hope this helps Ian. :)

Hi Ian,

thanks, I'll give that a try. Like you, mine have got to the point where the vision is slightly obscured.

Cheers

Hi All,

just thought I'd let you know that I tackled this today. Not having a craft knife to hand, but being married to a vet, I ended up using a scalpel which worked very well and the job was done in about 10 minutes.

I basically cut into the film to and fro with the scalpel blade as if trying to rub out a pencil mark, which sliced and lifted the film off. Any remaining goo was removed quickly with acetone.

Hope that might help anyone in the future.

cheers
