Post by brorabongo » Sun May 03, 2009 5:51 pm

Wifes just phoned to say the bongo will not go into fifth gear,( Manual box) it rattles. Other gears seem ok, So I've told her to drive home ( around 16 miles)slowly in forth.

Any Ideas. [-o<

Apart from the obvious and checking oil levels and the selector mechanism under the lever, mine had worked loose before and I had a bit of trouble selecting gears, did she try the old trick of pumping the clutch in case its that. Hope its not the box itself, I have been wondering what I would do should I need a new manual box.

is ure box 2or 4 wd the bt 50 and ranger have had problems with 5th gear also,if so the parts if any needed should be readily available.thats if it's the same box, hopefuly it might be a selector fault rather than the box.

good luck stevie.

Cheers David, I'll have a look when she gets back, It's still going ok in fourth, and she's now a lot closer to home thank goodness. I did not know about the pumping the clutch trick, so as far as I know, she did not try it.

Box has a rattle, even in neutral  I'm trying to upload a short video with sound.

It's a 4wd by the way.

Cheers stevie and Allen.

Would the selector rattle? I would say it sounds like its coming from around the bell end of the box, might even be in front of that it's coming from? but it is hard to tell, and I've no stethoscope. :( I will be phoning the local garage in the morning.

Video still uploading.

Update

I drove the bongo up on ramps, and had a look underneath. Is there something missing/wrong with the clutch linkage? as seen in photo. The linkage is not joined to the clutch lever. theres just a thin bit it poking through. When driving the bongo up the ramp there was no rattle. :? but now the clutch pedal sticks. :?

When I told the wife she said "Oh, I thought the pedal dropped a bit when it happened."

have u tried selecting gears ureself, the rattle could be from the clutchfork or release bearing although if these are gone it wouldnt just effect 5th gear it would be all gears! the pic looks like the slave cylinder is almost fully extended ,does it move much when the pedal fully depressed?

Possibly not being much help as my bongo is auto, but is that pbit supposed to poke through the release arm?

Many years ago i had a problem with a Mk 2 Cortina with a similar arrangement, the piston from the slave cylinder wore through the release arm.

Easy fix, put a thread on the bit poking through and put a nut on it, then grind it into a knob.

Am I making myself clear here?

I understand what your saying swerve. :o

Another thing I have just noticed, is when I push the rod back fully, the fork? ( what the rod was poking through) has what I would of thought was a lot of play.

When you then push the rod back as far as it will go and then press the clutch pedal, the pedal sticks, when you pull the pedal back into position, and pump again it starts to work ok. I'm guessing it's to do with the slave cyclinder etc, and thats working ok?

With the engine running, there is a slight rattle from the area of the fork, and when you press the clutch pedal the noise disappears.

Theres no Lushproject diagram for the manual box. :(

Edit: Forgot to add, with the engine off etc, all gears can be selected.

sounds like the release bearing has possibly collapsed the fork should move consideribly more than a few mm,i'm afraid the box will have to come oot for further investigation, poss a full clutch kit would sort it best of luck at the garage.

cheers stevie.
