Not Bongo but coolant relevant !!

Post by haydn callow » Fri May 01, 2009 12:34 pm

Hi there, we had similar issues on our last big trip. The Patrol was overheating under load and as soon as I would ease off the temp would come back down.

Patrols like to use the specific nissan coolant and do not like to have any coolants mixed at all. Believe me as I found this out the hard way.

We put the car in for a full service prior to leaving and ended up having the radiator rebuilt in Broome. It was blocked due to the coolant turning jelly like and I was only operating on about 2/3 capacity. A clean out, new top tank and almost $800 later and all was good and still is

Another lesson in not mixing the coolants & flushing it all out thoroughly

After reading a post the other night about rad sludge.. 8-[
I checked my radiator just now after a trip back from Bath (if you remember i had a top hose go last October which nearly fouled the Woodland meet, Bellhill repaired, flushed & put the red/pink coolant in.) All is OK, the levels fine, but the radiator was cold at the bottom & hot at the top.. Uh oh thinks I!! :-k Primary ignition on the fan was working so i started the engine.. The radiator warmed the full height all over straight away...

Is that normal?

I'm talking about the rad behind the skinny one in front.!

would be normal as you don't have the 50mph plus cool airflow through the rad. and the temp of the engine would have risen whilst the engine was off for a few mins

Cheers Haydn,
Makes sense, i only stopped the engine for about 10 minutes..
Though i'd ask as you have laid hands on a fair few of these!
