Rear End Shudder when pulling away

Post by wormey » Tue Apr 28, 2009 9:01 am

I have had Freda for 3 months now, she is still under warranty from a reputable dealer. Freda is a 4x4 2.5 diesel Auto with no LSD.

Recently under hard aceleration from standing (Straight line ) the back end shudders for a short while and disappears.

I had to take Freda back to the garage last week for unrelated warranty work and I mentioned it then.

I was told that it was normal, the symptoms are now getting slightly worse.

Should a Bongo/Freda shudder under aceleration, I love my Freda and want her just right. 8)

Not normal. Check tyres are same depths of tread and correct size. Could be the start of a viscous coupling fault.

Thanks for the replies,

New tyres all around same size, Last night I jacked up the back diff to have both wheels off the ground.

This morning no shudder at all, I take it I had wind up in the 4x4 system??.

Didn't think you got any wind up with same size tyres all round, unless a wheel was skidding :? :?

Or as Dandy says it could be the first signs of VC problems?

You'll get windup if the VC's faulty John as there's no guarantee all the tyres are EXACTLY the same circumference

Thanks Dandy :D I guess it must be the VC as it says new tyres all round, so they should be the same size (unless they're faulty  )

I have contacted the company and it's booked in for next week.

Could I have caused any long term damage to the VC, driven it for about 2000 miles. Where is the VC and how do I know if they've changed/repaired it. :?

Difficult to say - it's the big lump of casing on the back of the gearbox and it can't be overhauled (as far as I know)

Interesting explanation here...........

Put a great big unmissable mark on it with a file or something similar.

As DW says they aren't really repairable, so if it still has the same mark on it afterwards it hasn't been changed.

Will this mean that the whole gearbox may have to be changed, or just the VC lump on the end replaced with a new one.

Although under warranty [-o< , how much and how long do they last.

Thanks
